Spencer McFarland of Mackinaw City has been recognized for superior academic achievement and leadership potential, and is attending the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. He was sworn in as a member of the Class of 2012 June 30.

Mr. McFarland is the son of David and Marilyn McFarland, and the grandson of Gene and Evelyn Kapp of Carp Lake, and Bill and Janet Edema of Wyoming, Michigan.
