Kanitz, Campbell Fastest Runners of 7th Annual Les Cheneaux Run and Walk
Madeline Still, 11, (left), accepts her medal from Cedarville High Cross Country team member Luke Murray. She was the youngest female racer in the competition. Cross country team member Clayton Meyers is in the background. Forty-seven runners and walkers, ranging in age from 10 to 73, took to the streets in Cedarville Saturday, July 5, for the seventh annual Les Cheneaux Fun Run and Walk.
Lee Kanitz of Hessel was the fastest runner, completing the challenging five-mile course first in just over 30 minutes. He was followed closely by Elizabeth Campbell, a Marquette Island cottager, who finished second overall in just over 35 minutes. Sisters Kristen Bohn and Molly Snyder were the fastest walkers in the race. Race times for the top three places and individuals who made those times are listed here.
The course took runners and walkers through the Cedarville business district, up a steep hill, around Four-Mile Block Road, downhill, and along highway M- 134, back to Les Cheneaux Community Schools, where the race started. The race benefits the Cedarville High School Cross Country team, and team members assisted with the race. Their coach, Ryan Wilson, with local volunteers, coordinated the event. Proceeds from the race help pay for uniforms and team expenses.
Lee Kanitz of Hessel is the first to arrive at the finish line at the end of the Les Cheneaux Fun Run and Walk in Cedarville. This year's youngest runners were Michael Haske, 10, of Cedarville, and 11-year-old Madeline Still of Charleston, South Carolina. The oldest runner was James Macie of Jonesboro, Georgia, who is 68.
"Team Fennera," comprised of the Fenech and Herrera families, won the award for the largest group of participants.
