Yachts Head for Straits in 100th Chicago-Mackinac Race
Record Numbers Are Expected
      By Ryan Schlehuber Luckily, the Great Lakes has plenty of elbow room for this year's Chicago-to-Mackinac Yacht Race, as a record number of boats will be participating in the 100th running of the event, which will fill Mackinac Island's marina and put 100 boats to St. Ignace and up to 35 in Mackinaw City.

28 Sailboats Compete at Wilderness Bay
Cedarville's Foxy Lady Takes First in Regional Ensign Regatta
      Frank and Tom LaBelle, a local father-and-son team in Foxy Lady, earned championship honors at the annual Ensign Class Sailing Regatta at the Les Cheneaux Islands Friday, July 11, through Saturday, July 12. The event attracted 28 boats from five states for a seven-race series in Wilderness Bay near Hessel.

Mackinac Bridge Hikes Commuter Card Deposit
      The minimum deposit required to open a commuter account at the Mackinac Bridge was increased two-fold, from $40 to $80, Saturday, July 12, and the one-time fee to process the account rose from $5 to $10. Commuter card holders will also now need to deposit at least $80 when they recharge their cards.

DDA Wants To Upgrade Park Features
Downtown Plan Proposed
      Replacing pathway lights at American Legion Park, some of which were recently vandalized, replacing a deteriorating limestone path at the park, adding swingsets, and adding a brick walkway over the grass are among projects the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) would like to see put in a five-year plan that will guide downtown upgrades.

Gun Club Range Ready for Target Practice Near Moran
      The pop and bang of pistols and rifles can be heard in an isolated area near Castle Rock Road and M- 123 in Brevort Township, revealing the excitement of the re-organized Mackinac Straits Shooters Association, which recently secured a 10- year lease on land for its rifle and pistol ranges. The ranges offer a safe place to practice and hold competitions.

Challenges of 'Helo Ops' Training Prepare Coast Guard Station St. Ignace Crew for Rescues
      Most people are not prepared for the intensity of having a helicopter hovering over their head, said Executive Petty Officer John Tribfelner of Station St. Ignace, which is why helicopter operations, or "helo ops" in rescue parlance, are more stressful than most of the rescue training received at the Coast Guard station.

Saints of Steel Cut CD at Opera House Performance
     The Saints of Steel band took the stage at the Cheboygan Opera House Saturday, July 12, treating a large audience to a concert at which the band was also recording its second CD. The band is made up of St. Ignace students, with a few guest performers for the occasion, and played about a dozen songs. Shown here (bottom row) are guest performer and instructor Scott Brown, Molly Paquin, Angela Cena, Stacy Goldthorpe, Audrey Wyers; (middle row) Dustin McKenzie, Sarah Cullip, Megan LaRocque, music teacher Stephanie Terpening; (next row) Miska Cardin, Luke Paquin, band director Jason Byma; (back row) Haillee Brown, Molly Sposito, Joe Snowaert, Colin Chan, Ivy Thurston, and Autumn Huskey. The band's CD will be available in August and proceeds will support the school band program.
