Les Cheneaux
We have had some very nice weather in the Les Cheneaux area during the past week. The vegetable garden that we planted, a week later than we should have, is looking quite good and we hope to, at the very least, get a few fresh beans before the summer is over.
There will be a community recognition party given by the Les Cheneaux Historical Association for Annegret Goehring for the many years of dedicated service that she has given to that organization and to the community in general. This reception will be open to the public and will take place at the Historical Museum Sunday, July 27, from noon to 4 p.m.
"This is not just another fish story," Mike Rusk said about the big northern pike that he caught July 6. The fish was 42 inches long and weighed 19 pounds, a real prize catch. It fought for 20 minutes and broke the fish net before it was finally landed. Mr. Rusk is the son of Ed and Phyllis Rusk of Big LaSalle Island, Urie Bay, and he resides in Columbia, South Carolina.
A concert will be given at First Union Church Sunday, August 10, at 6:30 p.m. by Randy and Marli Brown. Marli and Randy and their two children travel in a motor home and perform in churches of various denominations throughout the country. Families are welcome to come and enjoy their musical ministry. The Browns have produced several recordings of original songs as well as traditional hymns. Refreshments will be served after this concert.
Bert Cady, once a fishing guide and hunter at Les Cheneaux, with a string of fish commonly caught in the early 1900s. (Photograph courtesy of Dorothy Glashaw) The busiest place in town these days is the Les Cheneaux Community Library. It is always buzzing with activity for children, teens, and adults. The library is open from Tuesday through Friday every week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and until 8 p.m. Thursdays. Saturday hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library features children's programs, computer classes, book clubs, teen night, and a film series.
The late Bert Cady was a wellknown fishing guide and hunter who owned a bait and tackle business in Cedarville many years ago. Bert, according to an old article in the former local magazine Breezes, was also quite a good pitcher for the local baseball team. The accompanying photograph shows Bert with a string of fish, such as were commonly caught here in the early part of the 1900's.
Michael Rusk of Columbia, South Carolina, caught this pike Sunday, July 6, while visiting his parents, Ed and Phyllis Rusk of Big LaSalle Island. (Photograph courtesy of Michael Rusk) "Hello Dolly" will be presented by the Les Cheneaux Education Foundation and will be the 20th year of "Summer Theater in the Snows." A special dress rehearsal of "Hello Dolly" for Les Cheneaux Islands Association members and their guests will take place Thursday, July 24. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $14 for adults, $12 for seniors (65+) and students (13-17), $10 for children (12 and younger). Cedar Cove, the retirement home on Weston Avenue in Cedarville, will host an Open House Friday, July 25, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served, door prizes given, and the public is invited to see this nice facility.
A Community Garage Sale will take place Saturday, August 16, when many will have items for sale. The Cedar Cove will also be a part of that and if anyone has a non-clothing item they may wish to donate, they are asked to bring it to Cedar Cove by Friday, August 15.
It was sad to learn of the recent death of Jeanette Hilton. Ms. Hilton was the smiling face and helpful lady behind the counter of what is now Ace Hardware for many years. She was also a true fisherman and exchanged wonderful fishing stories with my husband and many others during her summers in Cedarville. Many, including me, remember her as a very special lady.
