Robert Carter
Robert W. Carter, 69, of Rudyard, was a military policeman before he worked as a manager and a salesman in Sault Ste. Marie for many years. Mr. Carter passed away Tuesday evening, July 15, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a short illness with cancer.
He was born November 22, 1938, in Highland Park to Harold and Dorothy (nee Hilliker) Carter.
Mr. Carter was graduated from high school and attended two years of college. He spent three years in the United States Army as a military policeman. He left the service in 1965, as a corporal.
He married Naolta K. Born October 14, 1961.
Mr. Carter had lived in the Rudyard area since 1975. He was the general manager for Soo Bottling for more than 20 years, and he also worked for Soo Motors as a salesman for 15 years.
He was a member of the Soo Elks Club, Lakers Blue Liners, Rudyard Lions Club, and Family Motor Coach Association. He also was a member of the First Congregational Church in Brimley.
After his first wife's death, Mr. Carter married Lolene Born July 16, 1999, and she survives. Also surviving are one son and his family, Robert J. "Butch" and Amy Carter of L'Anse; two daughters and their families, Denise and Mark Kauer of Minot, North Dakota, and Jeanette and Kevin Brown of McBain; two stepsons and their families, Reginald and Jodi Loveland of Jonesville, and Russell and Krissy Smith of California; two stepdaughters and their families, Gail and Ed Cantu of Magnolia, Texas, and Laura and Robert Moore of Spring, Texas; one brother and his family, Dick and Ilene Carter of Rochester, New York; one sister and her family, Nancy Carter of Columbia, South Carolina, and 17 grandchildren.
His first wife passed away February 14, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Dorothy (nee Hilliker) Carter.
At his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Saturday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Brimley with Pastor Rodney Case officiating. Burial will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
Memorials may be directed to the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund, with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home, which assisted the family with arrangements.
