Underwater Research Begins Next Week at St. Ignace
Pride of Michigan Will Arrive Sunday
      Underwater exploration will begin next week off the shores of St. Ignace with hopes of discovering evidence of ancient civilizations. The announcement was made at the St. Ignace Fish Feast and Mackinac Bridge Celebration Saturday, July 25. The festival recognizes the importance of water to the heritage of the area and to the future of the community.

Fish Feast Draws 1,500+ to St. Ignace Marina
      Last weekend's St. Ignace Fish Feast and Mackinac Bridge Celebration was judged a success by organizers and vendors, who sold $20,000 worth of tickets at the event and are already planning improvements for next year's Fish Feast.

Bus Station Pulls Ahead
Work May Begin in Fall
      Busses could roll into a new St. Ignace bus station as early as May 2009. The $1.3 million depot, to be built on the corner of US-2 and Church Street, is moving forward again, and Tuesday, July 15, the St. Ignace Planning Commission reviewed the site plan and building configuration.

Hay Days Highlights Heritage
Pickford Parade Will Be Saturday
      Adorned with blooms to highlight this year's "Flower Power" theme, the Hay Days Parade will proceed through Pickford Saturday, August 2. Parade marshals will be Stanley and Marge Schmitigal of the Pickford Historical Society, honored for their enthusiasm for the area's heritage, beautification of the town, and passion for summer in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

      More than 600 people traveling from 25 states and Ontario filled Little Bear East Arena and Conference Center in St. Ignace Friday night, July 25, in hopes of seeing the familiar faces of old friends. They weren't disappointed.

      There are lots of new things to see at the Mackinac Area Historical Society's Summer Celebration Saturday, August 2. A new road connecs Mackinaw City's Historical Village to the site, a lane is now planted with maples, each donated to honor friends and relatives of the project's sponsors, and new buildings and activities await visitors.

Mackinaw Boys To Play at Historic Village Saturday
      Surrounded by fans, dressed in historical base ball regalia, John "Sewer Rat" Martin looked toward his first striker on the field in July 2006. A member of the vintage Mackinaw Boys team, he stood ready for historic base ball at Mackinaw Historic Village. It was a challenging moment for a modern baseball enthusiast, he said, playing by old rules.

Youth Now Taking Tennis Lessons on City Court
     Tennis lessons are back in St. Ignace, and more classes will offered in the future. They are taught by Jim Clement of St. Ignace, with the help of his family dog and ball retriever, Cali. Area children pictured here are making use of their summer vacation to learn the sport Wednesday, July 16. Part of the class's $5 registration fee will be used to help purchase rackets for those who don't have them. The classes are offered through the city Recreation Department, which plans to seek grants to improve the community tennis courts. Participating in the class (not pictured in order) are James Goudreau, Kolbe Peller, Bill Bentgen, Zack Harrington, Molly Sweeney, Cody Therrian, Stacy Goldthorpe, Kate Bentgen, Margo Brown, Jessie Frazier, Dylan Marshall, Austin Marshall, Gage Kreski, Lydia Brown, and Kody Rickley.

August 5 Primary Requires Voting Along Party Lines
      When 9,483 registered voters head to one of 14 precincts in Mackinac County to cast their ballots in the Tuesday, August 5, primary election, they will be voting along party lines, as required by state law.
