Great Start To Host Family Fun Night
      A children's carnival will take place Thursday, August 7, from 5: 50 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sault Tribe Head Start Building in Sault Ste. Marie. This event is free and open to the public. Dinner and free books for children will be provided.

      Oleksandr "Sasha" Obydyennov and Jessica VanLandshoot of Munising were united in marriage July 12, 2008, at Fayette State Park at the residence where her grandfather, Harvey St. Ours, lived when he was a child. Justice Bill Carmody, a friend of the family, officiated.

He is employed by Standish- Sterling Schools. Miss Foster is the daughter of Deborah Andress of St. Ignace and the late William Foster Sr. She is employed by Bay Valley Internal Medicine in Standish.

      Reeve Oberman Mark and Taylor (nee Campbell) Oberman of Cheboygan announce the birth of their son, Reeve Conrad, born Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital in Cheboygan. He weighed 7 pounds, 12.75 ounces at birth and measured 20.5 inches in length.

United Way Hosts Local Heroes Chili Cook-off August 12
      United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula will hold its seventh annual Local Heroes Chili Cook Off Tuesday, August 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste. Marie. Admission is $5 per adult; $3 for children 5 to 12; and free for children younger than 5.

John Rogers Is Graduated From Border Patrol Academy
      John Rogers of Rudyard has been graduated from the Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, where he earned a sharpshooters certificate, and received credentials, firearm, and badge. In August, he will be stationed in Laredo, Texas.

Paquin Earns Army Medal
      Command Sergeant Major Thomas Paquin of St. Ignace was recently awarded the Army Commendation Medal. Command Sergeant Major Paquin is assigned as the Post Command Sergeant Major with Joint Maneuver Training Center, Michigan Army National Guard, Camp Grayling. He was awarded the medal for consistently demonstrating keen organizational skills and motivational leadership.

Tickets Are Available for 'Kitchen Witches'
      Tickets are now on sale for the upcoming DeTour Fine Arts Council production of "Kitchen Witches," a comedy. Performances are Friday, August 15, and Saturday, August 16, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, August 17, at 2:30 p.m. at the Cultural Center in DeTour Village. Pajama Party Presents Skit Based on Book
      Participants in the Pajama Party in Pickford will present a skit based on the children's book "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" Thursday, August 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pickford Town Hall. Parents are asked to bring a dish to pass, along with the recipe. Votes will be cast for the best dish. Donations of quarters will be used to vote for a favorite dish.

     A 4-H Summer Camp took place Tuesday, June 24, through Thursday, June 26, at Cedar Campus near Cedarville, drawing 64 youth, teens, and adults from Mackinac and Luce counties. Summer Hessel Resident Shares Collection of Vintage EUP Postcards
      In his attempt to learn more about his family history in the Les Cheneaux Islands, David Brobst of Hessel and Pickerington, Ohio, along with his daughter, has been sorting many old postcards that his great grandparents collected during their travels throughout mostly the mid-western states. He stores the postcards in a plastic container, organized by state.
