Les Cheneaux
One of the highlights taking place for the whole month of August is the Art Council's Exhibit at Cedarville Inn. Beginning August 1 and continuing for the month, the exhibit is a fine example of some of the artistic endeavors of not only local residents, but of many of our visitors who take the classes offered by the Les Cheneaux Arts Council. The exhibit is open to the public.
On the agenda for this week is the Les Cheneaux Islands Association dinner Thursday evening, August 7.
There were memorials for some of our citizens, A. Victor Abnee III, Dr. Bill Collins, and Sandy Wells. All three of these men will be a loss to our community.
The re-dedication of the gazebo that was placed at the Cedarville launching ramp recently by the Advisory Committee will be Wednesday, August 13, at 11 a.m. Light refreshments will be served at the gazebo after the ceremony.
A special anniversary was held at the Heuck cottage on Rose Point on Big LaSalle Island last week, marking 100 years of its existence. There has not been a single year since that time that the cottage has not been occupied by a member of that family. Many may still remember Robert and Florence Heuck, whose descendents still enjoy that very special place in the Snows.
Kane Ayres of Hessel, 2, shows off the snake painted on his face by face-painters and cousins, Katie and Ali Eberts, also of Hessel (not pictured), during Music and Art Dockside in Hessel Sunday, July 20. A flag marked "100 years" was flying as guests and members of the Heuck family gathered for the anniversary. Family members coming from Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Providence, Rhode Island, and places beyond, including sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces, and nephews, along with long-time family friends, gathered to honor the beginning of what Cedarville has known as "Cincinnati Row." After dinner, wonderful stories of past summers were exchanged and it was truly a time to remember.
The annual Les Cheneaux Antique Wooden Boat Show in Hessel will take place Saturday, August 9. The show has received national acclaim and displaying the antique boats, along with the Arts Festival, always offers a day packed with activity. There will be something for everyone to enjoy, including food concessions, the Arts Festival, musical entertainment, and the greeting of friends. It is always a busy and enjoyable weekend. Weather predictions for that weekend are for sunny, dry weather, a perfect weekend for this outdoor show.
Ensign Season Sails to a Successful Finish
The following results of the local Ensign regatta were submitted by Sheelagh Knapp:
The Ensign sailors who participated in the three-day regatta Wednesday, July 30, through Friday, August 1, were treated to some of the finest sailing of 2008. Except for a short weather-related postponement owing to light air before the first race on the second day, the wind was consistently strong. In spite of changing wind direction and some close calls, skilled sailors avoided all situations that would result in protests, and only one general recall was necessary.
Twelve boats sailed in the A Fleet, with strong competition among nine boats in the B Fleet. The results of the regatta are as follows: In third place overall in the B Fleet was White Loon, skippered by Doug Heuck. In second place was Dragon Lady, skippered by Jack Edwards, and in first place was Osprey, skippered by Peter Hesser.
In third place in the A Fleet was Second Wind, skippered by Mark Birkmeier. In second place was Tecumseh, skippered by David Snyder, and in first place was Foxy Lady, skippered by Tom LaBelle.
The season championships have now been determined, with the results as follows: In third place overall for the season in the B Fleet was Breezie Weezie, skippered by Dave Parlin. In second place as Sunrunner, skippered by Fred Moore, and in first place was Osprey, skippered by Peter Hesser.
In third place overall for the A Fleet was Borealis, skippered by John Birkmeier. In second place was Foxy Lady, skippered by Tom LaBelle. In first place was Second Wind, skippered by last year's winner of Most Improved Sailor, Mark Birkmeier.
Congratulations to all sailors who participated in this year's windy, exciting series of races. The race committee would like to recognize all of those sailors who managed to miss hitting the committee boat, especially Instinct and Tecumseh, who left nearly an inch to spare as they passed us. Good job, everyone.
