The roof collapsed on two vehicles that were parked inside the building. The attached automobile showroom, said St. Ignace Fire Chief John "Bucky" Robinson, received heavy water and smoke damage.

Half of the garage roof collapsed, he said, and the remaining portion of the roof was "hanging by a thread" Monday.

The business is owned by brothers Paul and Joe Krause of St. Ignace, and employs eight people. They plan to rebuild and are making plans to set up a temporary building to use as a sales office.

Firefighters arrived on the scene about 2:30 a.m. and were able to retrieve vehicle keys from inside the building, and automobiles for sale at the business were moved to safety by the business' owners, said Chief Robinson. They were not damaged during the blaze.

The cause of the fire is unknown. A fire investigator was expected to be on the scene Monday.

Assisting the St. Ignace Fire Department were firefighters from Brevort and Mackinaw City. The St. Ignace City Police and Michigan State Police also responded.
