Chief Mackinac Takes Best in Show
Bittersweet Is People's Top Choice at Hessel
      Chief Mackinac, a 1917 Consolidated, returned to Hessel last weekend and captured the 2008 Best of Show and first in her class awards at the Les Cheneaux Islands Antique Wooden Boat Show. The 32-foot launch has spent 87 of her 91 years in Hessel, said owner John Allen, who now keeps the vessel on Gull Lake in Minnesota.

Marshall Hired as Coach; School Meal Prices Go Up
      Jason Marshall will be the new head coach for varsity boys basketball at LaSalle High School this fall, Ona Lee Gibson has been hired to teach at the Tribal Youth Facility and LaSalle High School. The St. Ignace Board of Education approved the hiring at its Monday, August 11, meeting.

Mackinaw City To Host Up to 20,000 Bikers August 25
      Mackinaw Crossings has received permission to host a party for an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 motorcycle riders Monday, August 25. The riders will stop in Mackinaw City on a trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the base of operations for Harley Davidson. The ride, called the 105th Ride Home, references more than 100 years of Harley history. It is open to the public.

Encampment, Powwow Set for August 23 at St. Ignace
      A family event that celebrates the history of the St. Ignace area, the Rendezvous at the Straits French Voyageur Encampment and Powwow is set for Saturday, August 23, and Sunday, August 24. Open to the public, the voyageur encampment begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Father Marquette Memorial Park in St. Ignace. The Powwow runs from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Shepler Rezoning Decision Delayed
      The Mackinaw City Village Council voted 4-3 Thursday, August 7, to delay action on a planning commission recommendation to place Shepler's lakefront parcels in a district that prohibits motels and hotels. The matter was delayed to include the participation of business owner Bill Shepler and Planning Commission Chairman Robert Most.

Moran Twp. Considers Ash Borers Grant, Forestry Plan
      If sufficient demand by Moran Township residents warrants it, trustees will pursue a grant through the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to replace ash trees that are likely to be killed by the Emerald Ash Borer, a voracious insect that has destroyed ash trees throughout the region.
