More ... Linda Sue Moskwa, 47, passed away Sunday, August 3, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, with her family at her side. She fought bravely for eight months, after a lung cancer diagnosis. Her brother, Steve, attended her funeral Thursday, August 7, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon. More ... We've had a few picture-perfect U.P. days with warm breezes, bright sunshine, and delightful temperatures. The folks in our tiny towns have been filling up their berry buckets with what has turned out to be a bumper blueberry crop. Missy and Pat Milligan, along with their children, Andrew and Ali, traveled from Grand Rapids while Kay McKenzie, their mother and grandmother, had surgery. Ms. McKenzie is in stable condition at this time as a patient at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey. More ... Have you wondered what Bernie Huyck has been doing since his retirement? After talking to him this past week, I discovered that he went through two major surgeries, the first taking five hours at War Memorial Hospital. He was very ill for some time and scheduled another intestinal surgery four to six weeks following the first. More ... The lazy, hazy days of summer are just that. Visitors, vacationers, and residents are thoroughly enjoying the weather in August. What a great time to be here in the beautiful Eastern Upper Peninsula. This year, however, the weather has stayed warm, with more of the same predicted. Many families are leaving because of school starting, along with football practice, but those of us who are fortunate enough to stay will enjoy the fine weather. More ... Dear Mark: I play roulette when I feel lucky, which is hardly ever, however I noticed that at one local casino where I play that if you watch real close, they change balls every time they spin the wheel. More ... Twenty years ago, it was a rare occasion when a wolf wandered the woods of the Upper Peninsula. The large canines were thought to have been extirpated from the state by the 1960s. But wolves can be grand travelers and occasionally, animals from Canada or from an established population in Minnesota found their way here. More ... |
