Linda Sue Moskwa, 47, passed away Sunday, August 3, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, with her family at her side. She fought bravely for eight months, after a lung cancer diagnosis. Her brother, Steve, attended her funeral Thursday, August 7, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon. Memorials may be made to Sparrow Hospice Services, 1210 West Saginaw, Lansing, Michigan 48915. Island friends send deepest sympathy to the family.

A Daisy Days fundraiser will benefit the Stella King Scholarship Fund Wednesday, August 20, at the Mackinac Island Post Office, taking place all day.

Sunday, August 10, was a perfectly beautiful summer day on Mackinac, with brilliant warm sunshine and heavenly blue skies as family and friends made their way to Ste. Anne's Church for the 2 p.m. concert, featuring two young ladies of the Island, Peggy Bynoe on the piano and vocalist Carolyn May. The acoustics in the old historic church are the finest, and the music sounded wonderful. Mackinac is proud of Peggy and Carolyn, and everyone enjoyed their talents. Peggy's mother, Judy Bynoe, who is recovering from recent hip surgery, was able to attend the concert. Carolyn's sister, Heather, an accomplished flutist, will also give a concert in two weeks at Ste. Anne's.

A rare sight: The 647-foot-long Arthur Anderson, a member of the U.S. Steel fleet since 1952, was seen passing Mackinac Island on the northeastern side Sunday, August 10. Freighters usually will pass through the Round Island channel, between Mackinac and Round islands, on the south side of Mackinac Island, however, high winds forced the freighter to make the longer trip around the back of Mackinac Island. The Arthur Anderson was the last boat to be in contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald before it sank November 10, 1975. It was also the first to arrive at the scene to search for survivors, but there were none. It was truly a delightful evening.

The barn crew at the Mackinac Island Carriage Tour's Big Barn surprised Bob Gillespie Tuesday, August 12, with signs, balloons, and a big cake in celebration of his 80th birthday. Everyone had a great time.

Brother Jim Boynton, S.J. of Detroit has been assisting Father Rey Garcia at Ste. Anne's during the summer months. He left Wednesday, August 13, to return to his duties in Detroit. Best wishes to Brother Jim from Island friends.

We send best wishes to Donnie Francis, who was transported to Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey Tuesday, August 12, after suffering a stroke at his home in the Mission. His wife, Gracie, accompanied him to the hospital.

Jennifer, David, and Lucas Karhoff of Findlay, Ohio, returned home Monday, August 11, after spending 10 days at their cottage on Bourisaw Lane. Lucas started school Monday, August 18. It was great having you on Mackinac.

The Rt. Rev. Cate Waynick, Episcopal Bishop of Indianapolis, is again vacationing on Mackinac Island with her husband, Larry. She preached and presided at Trinity Church Sunday, August 17, at 10:30 a.m., reflecting on her participation earlier this month at the special Lambeth Conference in London, a gathering held every 10 years, involving all of the bishops in the worldwide Anglican community.

Jack and Dorothy Dehring celebrated their wedding anniversary August 17. Hope you enjoyed your day.

The wonderful display of kites flying from Windermere Point every day is truly a sight to see. There are all different colors, sizes, and shapes floating above the Straits of Mackinac. Ben Nye, owner of Great Turtle Toys, does a remarkable job flying so many kites in the varying winds.

Nick and Nancy Dreliozis from Muskegon, with their three children, Daniel, Valarie, and Thomas, have been visiting the Island for the past 21 years. The charm of the Island keeps them coming back each year.

The Island artists held a reception Friday, August 1, at the Mackinac Island Public Library. The honored guest was Marta Olson's mother, Marian Petersen, of Harbor Springs. She had a wonderful time visiting with her many Island friends.

Bruce Goodwin and Joan Fox- Goodwin, with Bruce's cousin, Maeve Croghan and Stew Stewart, hosted a party for friends at the Goodwin's cottage, "Casa Verano," on the West Bluff Wednesday, August 6. The Goodwin children, Alexia and Jordan, entertained their friends on the front lawn. Guests enjoyed singing old songs at the piano, led by Marylinn Putz on the piano. James Dunnigan tended bar.

Geraldine Wellington and Marsha Orr celebrated their birthdays August 19. Hope you both enjoyed your day.

In honor of their 25th wedding anniversary, and the 15th year of operation of the Mackinac Island Butterfly House, Bill and Jean Allen entertained friends at a luncheon at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club. It was a wonderful celebration.

The Mackinac Island Summer Concert Series featured the United States Air Force Mid-America Woodwind Quintet Sunday, August 10, at Mission Church, and Monday, August 11, at Windermere Point. It was most enjoyable.

The Annual Horse Show was Sunday, August 17, at Great Turtle Park.

Mark your calendar for the annual blood drive Wednesday, August 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Hall.

The Mackinac Island Medical Center Auction will be Sunday, August 24, at Grand Hotel. Come and join in the fun. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.

Another beautiful ride through the Island was enjoyed Tuesday, August 12, with Buck and Alice Sharrow, where we viewed Grand Hotel, West Bluff cottages, Stonecliffe, Stonebrook, Fort Holmes, and the East Bluff. Along the way, the wildflowers were at their peak, daisies, black-eyed Susans, and yellow buttercups, and let us not forget the wild raspberries. It truly was a million-dollar ride, and my cousin, Virginia Riordan, loved it.

Greg Hokans, chief of development and marketing for Mackinac State Historic Parks, with his two sons, Christian, 17, and Hans, 19, enjoyed a football game at Green Bay, Wisconsin, where they watched the Packers play the Cincinnati Bengals Monday evening, August 11. Mr. Hokans' family has had season tickets to Packers games since 1957, when Lambeau Field was built.
