Have you wondered what Bernie Huyck has been doing since his retirement? After talking to him this past week, I discovered that he went through two major surgeries, the first taking five hours at War Memorial Hospital. He was very ill for some time and scheduled another intestinal surgery four to six weeks following the first. Today he is feeling much better, after taking a two-week vacation to visit his brother in Indiana, following his last successful surgery in Marquette.

Bernie works in his woodworking shop a few hours a day, puttering on his one-year project of building a china cabinet for his sister in-law. He also makes picture frames when someone needs one. It is just a hobby, Bernie said, which has been therapeutic.

I met Lena Miller, a Pickford resident at Hessel Beach this week. She was enjoying having her grandson, John Miller, who is staying with her for a vacation. Lena was born and grew up in St. Ignace, then after her husband passed, she lived in Sault Ste. Marie, until she recently moved to Pickford. She said she enjoys her quiet upstairs apartment very much. Her grandson is from Kincheloe.

Bernie Huyck Bernie Huyck Bob Jones is hospitalized in Petoskey, after complications with the healing process, following his back surgery a couple of weeks ago.
