Wesley Therrian of Whitewater, Wisconsin, will be in St. Ignace for the annual Mackinac Bridge walk on Labor Day. It also gives him time to catch up on visits with relatives, and maintain his property on Fenlon Road.

Donna Pope of St. Ignace has returned from her trip to the Olympics in Beijing, China, where her granddaughter's husband, Adam Wheeler, won a bronze medal in wrestling. Donna's son, Bill Pope, in bringing her home last Tuesday, joked that he had wondered how she would get her "Saints Are #1" banner through customs into China, as Donna is known as an avid fan of all St. Ignace Saints sports teams. The St. Ignace News will have an upcoming story on her experiences at the Olympics.

Many classmates of the LaSalle High Class of 1981, and many more friends, gathered at a memorial service for Todd Backus at the beach cottage of Dave and Lois Movalson in Brevort Wednesday, August 20. Mr. Backus, also a LaSalle Class of 1981 alumnus, died August 20, 2007, in Texas.

Les Nyland of Moran was an award winner with his 1915 Ford Model T at the Slashin' Ashmun Car Show in Sault Ste. Marie August 2.

Jason Smith and Robert Holmes report that a Farmers Insurance Mobile Catastrophe Response vehicle will be parked at the St. Ignace city Marina Friday, August 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. Tours of the vehicle will be offered free to the public. The company vehicle travels to disaster sites to help people immediately process insurance claims.

The Chippewa County Fair in Kinross started Tuesday, August 26.

Many people have memories of the Mackinac County Fair, no longer taking place, which was held in Allenville many years back.

Last week I traveled to Escanaba, meeting with my granddaughter, Destiny Stenberg, and her mom, Lisa Leach of Cornell.

Sharon and Jim Laakko camped out near Grand Marais. Visitors from St. Ignace were their grandsons, Benjamin and Alex, along with their mother, Sherry Neering.

Kim, Mike, and Aaron Welch enjoyed a weekend in Paradise, where they attended the Wild Blueberry Festival.

We were sorry to hear the news of Russell Belonga's injuries, suffered in an accident while working last week, and will keep him in our prayers as he recovers from leg surgeries.

The annual Arts Dockside arts and crafts show will take place in St. Ignace Saturday, August 30, and Sunday, August 31.

As of Monday, August 18, a detour is still in effect while maintenance takes place on the Cut River Bridge on West US-2.

St. Ignace mud run enthusiasts traveled to Newberry Saturday, August 16, for a competition.

School doors will soon be opening across the country. Remember to use caution as you approach the bus stops.
