3 Weekend Shows Will Focus on Art
A public show and sale of art, photographs, handmade crafts, and jewelry will highlight the 31st annual Arts Dockside in St. Ignace during the Labor Day weekend. Music, entertainment, and food vendors will round out the show, which is free to the public.
About 80 artists and craft makers will be joined by five food vendors, who are participating in the openair event on the waterfront near the city marina beginning Saturday, August 30, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The show opens Sunday, August 31, at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m.
Pottery, woodwork, jewelry, paintings, fabric crafts, and photography will be among the original works offered at the show. During the early years of the event, say organizers, jewelry was the dominant display. Now, photographs have taken the top spot, with about six photographers registered, including returning St. Ignace photographers David Black and Ruth LaChapelle. Other returning favorites are gourmet dips from Pam's Pantry of Mecosta, Chippewa Fur Traders of Sault Ste. Marie, and Jan Rohen Jewelry of Marquette.
Musician Kerry West of St. Ignace will perform and has scheduled the show's entertainment package, which includes Jim Bishop, Margarat Madagame, Dave Jasmine, Marquette Folk Dancers, Catholic Girls Gone Bad, and juggler and comedian Crazy Richard.
Mackinac Animal Aid Association will hold its hot dog concession stand. Proceeds from the group's food sales are donated to the Mackinac County Animal Shelter.
Arts Dockside is organized by St. Ignace residents Jennifer Joseph and Jeanette O'Rourke, who work on the event with the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce. The first Arts Dockside was organized 31 years ago by the late Diane Goudreau Fraser.
