The hot weather we've been enjoying came to an abrupt end, with rain and cooler temperatures this past week. As of today, the fall season is definitely here, a favorite time of the year for many of us.

DeTour will be a busy place with special activities this month. The E.U.P. Fine Arts Council will have a fall luncheon and fashion show Saturday, September 13, with proceeds going to the restoration of the Council's Cultural Center (formerly Sacred Heart Catholic Hall). Doors will open at noon, and lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Fashions will be on loan from several stores in Sault Ste. Marie and Cheboygan. Models will be local ladies, with David Rhinard as master of ceremonies. Tickets for the event are $15 and must be paid for in advance, as tickets will not be sold at the door. Tickets may be purchased at The Timberdoodle in DeTour, or by calling (906) 297- 2787.

Happy Apple Days and the Scarecrow Festival will be Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in DeTour Village. There will be many events to attend. The DeTour Homemakers are sponsoring an apple dessert contest. Have your entry in before noon, as the judging will take place at that time. Prizes for winners who placed first, second, and third, will be announced at the auction to be held at the Cultural Center later in the afternoon.

The auction at 5:30 p.m. is sponsored by members of the DeTour Museum and the Botanical Gardens. Items are now being accepted. To donate items, call Judy Jones at (906) 297-3231 or Diane Karsh at (906) 297-5533.

Appraisers from the Auction Block in Manistique will be at the Village Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Happy Apple Day to offer antique appraisals. There will be a flea market, crafts, and vendors at the pavilion. Booths are still available. To reserve your space, please call Judy Jones at (906) 297-3231 or Candy Postula at (906) 297- 5885. The village's homes and businesses will be decorated with scarecrows.

The Huron Street Inn will have a vintage fashion show Happy Apple Day September 20. Proprietors David and Susie Rhinard will host the fashion show and a tea at 2 p.m. at their bed and breakfast. Styles from the past, dating from the late 1800s to the 1960s, will be modeled. The show will include several vintage wedding gowns donated by local residents. Tickets for the event are $5 and may be purchased at the DeTour Village office or by calling RuthAnn Hudak at (906) 297-8051. Proceeds from the vintage fashion show will support the DeTour Passage Historical Museum and the Botanical Gardens. The event is limited to 50 people.

The ladies of St. Stanislaus Church are planning their annual birthday dinner for Saturday, October 11. Cocktails will be served at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. Cost is $10 for an adult. There also will be a silent auction. Call in reservation for your "birthday table" at (906) 297-5211.

A thought: If you have to be allergic to something, why can't it be rutabagas instead of apples.
