The 2008-2009 school year has begun, and Engadine's enrollment has increased to almost 300 students. We have received students from downstate, Indiana, and adjoining school districts. Engadine Schools has not seen this increase in student numbers since the 1998-99 school year.

This year, we have many high school students who are taking classes through Michigan Virtual High School and our Interactive Television program. These are popular courses and they include foreign language, social studies, and advanced mathematics and science. Students taking these classes must have a B- grade point average or above and self-discipline. These are typically challenging courses.

We have experienced minimal transportation problems, even with additional stops north of Engadine and in the Curtis area. All bus stops should be established by next week, including three in Curtis proper. If anyone has questions regarding transportation, contact me or Cheryl Adams at (906) 477- 6313.

Under the direction of our new varsity football coach, Lester Livermore, and dedicated coaching assistants, our Eagles battled the St. Basil Saints August 30 and the Cedarville Trojans September 5. We lost both games, but the team's dedication remains strong. They play against Pellston Friday, September 12, in an away game.

The junior varsity volleyball team placed first at the Cedarville tournament last weekend and our junior high Eagles were equally successful playing against Brimley.

We are looking for parent and grandparent volunteers to work with elementary and secondary students. If interested, call Mrs. Adams or Lesa Baker.

Have a good fall season.
