It's a typical September day. There are signs of colors in some of the maple trees around the neighborhood, and the birds are singing later every morning. Watch for the school buses on the roads.

Lorie Quigley and Joe Stewart entertained guests from Pennsylvania this past week. Sharon and Richard Gathogan, with their dogs, enjoyed warm days running on the beach. Kay Allott and her dog, of Sault Ste. Marie, spent a long Labor Day weekend with Lorie and Joe. Joe and Lorie hosted a cookout on Labor Day. Guests included Horst and Ingrid Daemmrich, Pam and Charlie Movalson, and Dave and myself.

Charlie, Pam, and Chrissy Movalson did some fishing on Big Brevort Lake while they were here for the weekend at their home on Lake Michigan. Eric and Zach Movalson also spent the weekend at the family cottage. Fishing was the name of the game. I was lucky to land some tasty bluegills.

Ian and Amy Mitchell of Boyne City spent a few days at their vacation home on Wildwood Lane. Ian came by and visited on the front porch. He had lovely peaches for us, from the orchards around Boyne City.

Mary Carney had a friend from Port Ellsworth, Alaska, visiting her this past week. Mary's family spent the weekend at the Cunningham, Carney, and Engen home.

Owen and Barbara Jorgensen bought a home in Gaylord, and have moved there this past week. The Jorgensens have been looking to move to an area nearer to stores and other conveniences. We will miss them, but we will call on them.

Sharon Smith is the cookbook organizer, and she would like all recipes for the 100th anniversary cookbook turned in by the end of September.

Condolences to the family of James "Jim" Brown of St. Ignace, who passed away Monday, September 1.

Jeff and Pat Cranson hosted a fish boil for friends and neighbors Sunday, August 31. Ernie Gustafson was the chief boiler of fish.

John Kennedy is busy traveling back and forth to Cheboygan, where he is helping his grandchildren build a fort.

Chris Green and her daughters, Rachel and Page, of New Hudson, Anita Graham of Seymore, Tennessee, Marian Green, and Glen and Claudia Wiseman enjoyed a family vacation at the Green cottage on Lake Michigan this past week.

Jim Rose, in conjunction with the Ruffed Grouse Society, sponsored a hunting event Sunday, September 7, for youth at the Wy Camp near Bliss.

Jim Rose and Rick Weiss are continuing their prison ministry this week in Newberry. The ladies of Trinity Lutheran Church supply homemade cookies for Jim and Rick to take to the administrators and employees of the prisons.

The Shepards have had many guests at their Trout Lake cottage during the past two weeks, including Melissa Foster and Patty Truman, visiting from Athens, Ohio, accompanied by their two dogs. They were pleased to have friends Kim, Chris, Corinna, Kelli, and Dalene come to visit them during their stay. Albert and Rhonda Mundt of Mio were in residence over the Labor Day weekend. Jack and Rhonda picked more than 20 quarts of blueberries.

Jack and Thora's home in Brevort is getting a new roof and doors. The house was the original Carl E. and Hulda Carlson home. A new entryway was renovated. They report the garden is producing beans, tomatoes, and cucumbers, and the corn is nearly ready.

Bob Jarzynka is harvesting tomatoes and cucumbers from his garden, and he is sharing the bounty with neighbors.

Jackie Rippett was a Thursday morning caller at our home, and Taffy Coffey dropped by in the afternoon. Denny Rippett has come to the end of his volunteer work at the fort in Mackinaw City. Tom Coffey is still dealing with his antiques at his establishment west of Brevort.
