A caller from Toronto, Canada, contacted a St. Ignace woman September 2 from a disposable cell phone, identifying himself as her grandson, reporting that he had been in a car accident in Toronto, and asking her to wire money to him using an untraceable Wal-Mart money gram. The call was a hoax. The woman notified police in Toronto.

Local Michigan State Police, St. Ignace City Police, and the county sheriff's office reported no other calls of this kind that they are aware of in the area, but advised the public to be cautious.
