Former Michigan Department of Community Health Director Jim Haveman (second from right) was recognized for his help in obtaining funding and support for the new Mackinac Straits Hospital at a Grand Hotel luncheon on Mackinac Island Friday, August 15. Construction of the new facility will begin this fall, with opening scheduled for 2010. Mr. Haveman was able to obtain federal loan guarantees and direct federal loans, in part, because the hospital will combine its resources with those of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The hospital also operates the Mackinac Island Medical Center. Among those at the luncheon were (from left) hospital CEO Rod Nelson, board members Don McArthur, Chair Ron Mitchell, and former State Senator Walter North, former Michigan Governor John Engler, Mark Miller of the Haveman Group, hospital supporter Dr. Michael Bacon, Mr. Haveman, and Scott Walker of the Haveman Group.
