DNR Releases Small Game Forecast: Plenty of Rabbits, Squirrels, Ruffed Grouse for Hunters

Model Maker Completes Dock To Go With Sainte Marie
      Charles Purin has completed his latest scale model, the St. Ignace railroad dock, which compliments the model of the railway ferry Sainte Marie he finished last October. Mr. Purin is a 69-year-old U.S. Coast Guard retiree from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, who has been a model maker for more than 55 years.

Bayside Fall Fest Expanded With More Games, Activities
      St. Ignace Bayside Fall Fest will offer old-fashioned family fun highlighted by the favorite pumpkin roll down Goudreau Street hill. The annual celebration of autumn begins Saturday morning, October 4, in downtown St. Ignace. The festival will take place from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. in the downtown district from the municipal marina to Little Bear East Arena.

Planning Commission Loses One Member
Reaffirms Decision at Mackinaw City
      The Mackinaw City Planning Commission voted 7-1 to place two un-zoned, village-owned waterfront parcels in the marina commercial district, and took no action on a suggestion to add allowed uses to the district at its Thursday, September 11 meeting. The district prohibits hotels, motels, and retail operations.

      General Educational Development (GED) programs are now offered in Sault Ste. Marie, St. Ignace, Strongs/Eckerman, Newberry, Kinross, Brimley, DeTour, and Engadine through Consolidated Community School Services (CCSS). Generator, Bike, Copper Wire Stolen From Home
      A generator, a green Thomas folding bicycle, and 100 feet of braided copper grounding wire were stolen in a breaking and entering incident at a residence on East M-48, two miles south of Goetzville, in July, Michigan State Police reported.

EUP Students Gather To Address Self-Improvement
      Student leaders from Chippewa, Mackinac, and Luce counties in grades nine through 11 will gather in Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday, September 24, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to discuss the strengths of their communities and how to be strong community assets. They will meet at the Cisler Student and Conference Center at Lake Superior State University (LSSU).

Work Continues at Fitness Center
     Residents taking advantage of the new cardiovascular exercise room at Little Bear East Arena when it opens this fall will be able to enjoy cable television while using treadmills and other equipment. Digging the trench for a cable connection Wednesday, September 24, are Recreation Director Scott Marshall with the shovel and Department of Public Works employee Clifford Belonga operating the backhoe. As part of an agreement between the cable provider and the city, the service is free to all city buildings, although Little Bear East had not been previously connected to the service. Work on construction of the room (not pictured) continues, as the walls are up and the roof trusses were set in place last week.

New Fly Control Measures Tried on Island This Summer
      In the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August, Mackinac Island's fly population increases dramatically, and on an island where horses are a primary source of transportation, flies can quickly become a problem. The City of Mackinac Island is hoping a new fly predator program this year will improve the Island's overall fly control program.

Cut River Bridge Reopens in Oct.; Work Resumes in Spring

U.S. Forest Service Hosts Clean-up October 4
      The U.S. Forest Service is hosting a volunteer forest clean-up day Saturday, October 4, at 9 a.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Castle Rock parking lot near St. Ignace. The Forest Service has held 29 clean-up days in the past 11 years, using volunteer help to eliminate more than 51 illegal dump sites, and 1,000 tons of trash from the St.

The St. Ignace News Recognized for Veterans Coverage
     Michigan's 11th District of the American Legion recognized The St. Ignace News with a plaque noting the newspaper's ongoing coverage of American Legion activities in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. David Spencer, representing American Legion Post 323 in Pickford as well as his district of the Michigan American Legion Executive Committee, visited the newspaper office in St. Ignace Thursday, September 11, where he presented a plaque, accepted on behalf of the staff by editor Ellen Paquin. A card accompanied the plaque, signed by Pickford Post members. Mr. Spencer explained that the Legion appreciates the newspaper's coverage of veterans programs.

St. Ignace City Council Pay Reported
      In August, payment to members of the St. Ignace City Council for attending meetings and events totaled $3,130. Meeting salaries are set, while no rules constitute what events are eligible for payment. Council members are paid $70 for regular meetings, which are held on the first and third Monday of each month.

Gros Cap Students Raise Money for New School Sign
     The Gros Cap Student Council poses next to the school's new sign Thursday, September 18. The council paid for the sign through fundraisers conducted over the past two years. Pictured (from left) are Brandon Marshall, Joseph Krause, Haillee Brown, Galloway Thurston, Kristin Lenoir, Savannah Seccia, and Rachel Hetherington. Former Gros Cap student Austin St. Louis came up with the idea in the 2006/2007 school year. Last year, several students who have been graduated, helped with the effort, including Jeff Misner, Louis Radecki, Lawrence O'Boyle, and Michaela Cope.

Red Cross Training Offered
      The Chippewa County American Red Cross is sponsoring a two-day training opportunity for new volunteers willing to respond to disasters. Training will be Friday, September 26, and Saturday, September 27, in Sault Ste. Marie. The first session, "Fulfilling Our Mission," is Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
