Les Cheneaux
Our Les Cheneaux weather continues to be summer-like, with temperatures in the mid 60s and 70s. The trees are beginning to show quite a bit of color, so we know that it won't last forever, but we hope everyone enjoys it while it's here.
A joint meeting of the St. Ignace and Cedarville Red Hat Societies took place on a beautiful evening. More than 25 women sat around a warm fire in an outdoor fire-pit, roasting hotdogs and grilling hamburgers, plus enjoying potluck food. Members of both groups enjoyed a pleasant evening at the home of Shari and Ray Baron on the Pine River. It has been very nice for members of the Cedarville group to get to know some of the women from St. Ignace.
It was a pleasant surprise to see Alice and Joe Goldfarb and Helene and John Bentley in the grocery store the other day. Both families, who summer on Cincinnati Row on Big LaSalle Island, are here to enjoy our beautiful autumn weather. Also expected are Steve and Heike Berghausen, whose family also has a place on Big LaSalle. Ed and Phyllis Rusk have a home on Urie Bay, and they are also here for a long weekend. Cincinnati has suffered from Hurricane Ike as many other places have; trees were downed with the strong winds and electricity was out for several days there.
Red Hat Society members from St. Ignace and Les Cheneaux enjoy their first Red Hat picnic together Tuesday, September 16, at the home of Shari Baron. Bruce Patrick, who has contributed so much to this column over the past couple of years, has had serious health problems and has been in the hospital for surgery. Notes and cards will be welcome at 966 South Park Avenue, Cedarville, Michigan 49719.
The Les Cheneaux Snowmobile Club is planning a celebration Saturday, October 18, to mark its 41st anniversary. There will be an open house and swap meet at the Les Cheneaux Snowmobile Club on Blind Line Road in Cedarville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local snow-cross champions, James Hicks and Dale Dunn, will be there, as well as the Clark Township Emergency Services crew members, who will talk about winter rescues. The Naubinway Snowmobile Museum will bring antique snowmobiles. Food will be available for purchase.
That same day, the Mackinac County Sheriff 's Department will offer a snowmobile safety course for 12- to 16-year-old students at the Les Cheneaux Community Schools from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided to students. The class is limited to 60 students. Call Frank Harness to sign up for the safety class, at 484-2385.
