The War Board and the various committees in connection with the Fourth Liberty Loans having arranged to open the campaign by a parade and other patriotic demonstrations on Friday, September 27, I, as mayor of the City of St. Ignace, proclaim a public holiday between hours of 1 and 5 p.m. of said day and urgently request that each and every business place in the city be closed during such time. It is also requested that residences and business places along the line of march be decorated with the national colors so far as possible. - W.G. Wing, Mayor.

The Fourth Liberty Loan campaign will be inaugurated in St. Ignace by a celebration that should arouse every inch of patriotism in the hearts of every resident of the city, old and young. The line of march will be from the LaSalle school to Prospect street...thence to the Grand theatre, where the speaking and other portions of the program will take place. The parade will be headed by the City Band in the following order: Grand Army Veterans; Mayor and Councilmen; County Officials; War and Draft Boards; Ladies' Liberty Loan Committee; Men's Liberty Loan Committee; School Children; Automobiles.

Judge Collingwood, holding court at the Soo, refused citizenship to six applicants Saturday because they had not bought Liberty bonds.

The popular steamer Algomah, taking care of the service between Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City, ended her season on that run Monday, leaving in the morning for Cheboygan, where she will be laid up for the winter.

A service flag containing 74 names of members of the St. Ignatius church was dedicated Sunday.

Suspension of the "gasless" Sundays east of the Mississippi, beginning next week, pending a thorough investigation into the need for such a measure of conservation, is in progress.

As a result of the Liberty golf tournament under the direction of Instructor Frank Dufina of the Wawashkamo club, $68 was turned into the treasury of the Island branch of the Red Cross.

A major problem which complicates the planning of a new high school for St. Ignace is school district re-organization. The board of education has to know whether the proposed high school will serve the youth of the entire St. Ignace area, or only the City of St. Ignace. According to Supt. E.J. Ossmann, the board has delayed detailed planning of new facilities during the school area study which was recently completed.

Mrs. Clifford Gerdin returned to her home in Detroit after spending the summer at the Cedar Inn [Les Cheneaux]. Mrs. Gerdin is the owner and recently closed the Cedar Inn for the season.

The first time the Historical Society of Michigan ever held an annual meeting in the upper peninsula was its 53rd, in 1927, in St. Ignace.

Two Cheboygan fathers were arrested recently for allowing their juvenile children to be on the streets unaccompanied after 10 p.m. They paid justice court fines of $5 each. A subsequent offense may cost up to $25.

Purple & Gold News - The St. Ignace Saints, led by the fine quarterbacking of Stan Ferris and the kicking of Bob Kalbfleisch, handed the Boyne City Ramblers their first defeat in nearly three years by a score of 13 to 12 in a game under the lights Saturday night.

Michigan Bell telephone operators are making plans for several Open Houses at the Telephone Company's traffic and central office building on Spring Street here in St. Ignace. Visitors will see the last manually operated exchange switchboard in Michigan, which will be changed to dial in 1974.

Attorney James J. Brown successfully defended his client, Mackinac County, in a $2.5 million negligence action suit which was heard by Judge Philip Glennie last week in a jury trial in 26th Judicial Circuit Court in Cheboygan, Michigan.

At 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, the City Police were called to the Michigan Bell construction site on Church street, where a crew working under Bob Clearly, Michigan Bell inspector, reported that they had uncovered a skeleton in one of the six-inch trench sections. The skull, jawbone, and some teeth were taken to Dr. Hague, the Medical Examiner, who advised that they had been buried many years ago. They were returned and reburied on the same site after some other samples from the same area had been taken for further examination and possible dating by archaeologists who have been doing extensive work in this area the past few years.

Second Lieutenant David Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Smith, Cedarville, has been awarded his silver wings at Columbus AFB, Mississippi, upon graduation from U.S. Air Force pilot training.

St. Ignace will ask voters to approve a plan for $1.8 million in street improvements, covering all but a few residential streets in the city, in the November 2 general election.

St. Ignace's one and only taxi service, H&H Cab Co., rolled to a stop last week, evidently the victim of auto insurance costs that nearly tripled in one year.

Coffee, cake, crepe paper streamers, and congratulations were the order of the day Monday, September 20, as the Hessel Post Office celebrated its 105th anniversary of service. According to the Phil Pittman's book, "The Les Cheneaux Chronicles," "Hessel was given a fourth-class post office and a name when John Hessel was appointed postmaster on September 13, 1888."

Mackinac County officials are researching methods and costs of bringing 911 telephone service to the county, which is one of a handful in the state without the emergency line.

Senior Michelle LeCount scored a career-high 36 points and grabbed 25 rebounds to lead the St. Ignace Saints to a 69-51 Michigan Huron Shores Conference win over Rudyard Tuesday, September 14.
