Samantha Huyck of Pickford donated 10 inches of her hair to Locks of Love last week. She is pictured this week. Samantha's parents are Ben and Elizabeth Huyck. She also has an eight-month-old sister, Isabelle. Her grandparents are Deb and Richard Huyck, all of Pickford.

Locks of Love provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada who are suffering from a long- term medical hair loss from any medical diagnosis. To donate, you must have at least 10 inches of hair in a braid or ponytail. Hair donations may be mailed in a plastic bag, including donor's name and address on a separate sheet of paper, to Locks of Love, 2925 10th Avenue N, Suite 102, Lake Worth, Florida 22461

Last week I had an error in my column when I said that the Veterans of Foreign Wars showed their colors last Friday night at the football game; actually, it was the American Legion Post of Pickford. Alex Cottle was kind enough to call and tell me the difference. Thanks, Alex.

A banquet was held in the old gymnasium at Pickford High School by the Noah's Ark 4-H Club Sunday, September 28, at 1 p.m. to celebrate the 4-H Club's 10th year and to give out awards, certificates, and trophies.

Each family brought a cake to be judged. Mary Jane Pennington was the judge for the best cake, and she said it was hard to choose. They all were worthy of a prize, but she chose the cake made by the Waybrant family because it had two tiers of cupcakes, with a wide variety of animal faces made with gumdrops. The Waybrants are Brody and T.J., Cassidy 8, Jillian 5, and twins Allison and Rachel, 3.

After the contest, the cakes were cut and everyone had cake and ice cream.

Trophy winners were David Scales, Taylor Miller, Christy Galloway, Tiffany McCord, Ashley Galloway, James Leach, Stosh Reinhart, Abby Van Luven, Derek Edington, and Catherine Poirier.

Jill Miller gave a report of the 3- to 5-year-old group called Little Farmers; they learned how to milk cows, and about what farmers grow.

The afternoon was completed with a video made of both Kinross and Stalwart Fairs. Then door prizes were given to each member of the 4- H Club.

Donations of $500 each will be presented to the Iron Mountain Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center and Jacobetti VA Home by Stan Kennedy of the Pickford American Legion Post Saturday, October 4, at the American Legion Upper Peninsula District 10 and 11 Fall Meeting. The donations will help fund their respective Veteran Recreation Funds. Old Mission Bank also presented a matching donation in the amount of $500 to the Pickford American Legion Post 323 for the fund. The fund provides for veterans who are patients of the Iron Mountain VA Hospital, or residents at Jacobetti VA Home, with recreational activities and amenities.
