Mackinac Island

The weekend was beautiful, with bright sunshine, blue skies, and a feeling of fall in the air. Folks were enjoying the carriage ride, bicycling around the Island, or taking a leisurely walk and enjoying the beauty of Mackinac.

On historic Market Street, we are very pleased to see the new paint job on the Stuart House. The city crew did an excellent job. The flowers in the City Park and in front of City Hall are still in full bloom and are very attractive for all the visitors to see.

Mark and Jody Chambers will celebrate their wedding anniversary October 5. Enjoy your day.

We send deepest sympathy to Louie Leveille and family of St. Ignace on the recent death of his brother, Bob, in Escanaba.

Stopping by Doud's Market on Main Street, customers will be greeted by a display of bright orange pumpkins, which will soon be carved with happy faces and appear in homes and businesses around town for everyone to enjoy. It's that time of year that the children love - Halloween!

Happy birthday to Jimmy Hagenbaugh October 4.

Sales signs are appearing in many of the shops on Main and Market streets. Many people are doing some Christmas shopping.

Riding to Mission Point Resort, you will see a beautiful display of yellow blacked-eyed Susans covering the hillside. It is typical of the fall season.

Happy anniversary to Patty and Bruce LaPine, and Brad and Nancy Chambers October 6. Have a wonderful day.

While taking a stroll up Cadotte Avenue, one will view the Little Jewel golf course, covered with fresh green grass. The trees are starting to change colors, making it a breathtaking sight.

Jason St. Onge and a college friend attended the final game at Yankee Stadium last weekend. It was truly a historic event. Jason had a great weekend in New York.

There will be a pancake breakfast Sunday, October 5, at Ste. Anne's Hall. Come and enjoy a great breakfast.

Great news! Mackinac Island will be hosting the soccer finals Friday, October 17, and Saturday, October 18, at the Mark Gallagher Memorial Field. This will be a great event for the Island.

Happy birthday October 7 to Debra Orr, Laura Eisler, little Dominic Morse, and our good friend, Carol Clifton of Muncie, Indiana. Enjoy your day.

Chief of Police Jim Marks and his wife, Nancy, have a new addition to their family, a handsome little beagle from the Mackinac County Animal Shelter. Her name is "Connie" and she will be a faithful companion.

The Mackinac Island State Park Commission met at Fort Mackinac Friday, September 26.

Father Norman Dickson S.J. of Detroit celebrated Mass at Ste. Anne's over the weekend, in the absence of Father Rey Garcia. Father Rey is vacationing in Switzerland for two weeks.

Peggy Bynoe spent the weekend on Mackinac visiting her mother, Judy, and family. Peggy is a music teacher in Grand Rapids. She played the music for the 9 a.m. Mass at Ste. Anne's Sunday, September 28.

Woody Beardsley, a freshman at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, spent the weekend on Mackinac visiting family and friends.

There will be an Irish Mass at Ste. Anne's Saturday, October 4, celebrated by Bishop Patrick Cooney of Gaylord.

The Pub Runners and other entertainers will have a concert at 7 p.m. at Mission Point Theater.

We send get well wishes to Dot Gillespie, who was a patient at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey this past week. She is recuperating at her home in Hessel.

It was great to see Stephanie Arbib of Florida visiting Mackinac two weeks ago. She has recuperated well from her surgery, and was very pleased to be on the Island.

One of the most beautiful, huge white flowers, the snowball hydrangeas that have been adorning gardens all over the Island, still look bright and fresh this late in the season.

In speaking with Thelma Solomon of Kingsport, Tennessee, she reports that her husband, Dr. Joe, has been moved to a hospital near their home. He is still very ill from the fall he suffered, which fractured his neck. He would love to hear from his many Island friends at the following address: 111 Countryshire Court, Kingsport, Tennessee 37663. Dr. Joe and Thelma will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, October 4. They were married on Mackinac in the Mission Point Theater. The Solomons have three daughters, Jane, Ann, and Amy, who live close to their parents.

Dr. Richard Hodgman of Kalkaska was the doctor in residence at the Mackinac Island Medical Center over the weekend. Dr. Karen Miljour spent the weekend in Escanaba visiting her husband. The Hodgmans came bearing gifts for the Christmas Bazaar, to be held on Mackinac Saturday, December 6, through Sunday, December 8.

Congratulations to Bill and Erica Chambers on the birth of their daughter, Charlotte Jane, Monday, September 8. She weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces at birth and measured 20.75 inches in length. She is joined at home by her big sister, Shannon Grace. Proud grandparents are Larry and Donna Jones of Mulliken, and James P. Chambers and the late Barbara Chambers of Mackinac.

The Mackinac Island Lakers volleyball and soccer teams went to Beaver Island Friday, September 26, and Saturday, September 27. The soccer team won both games, and the volleyball team won one game and lost one game. They had a great time. Dan and Kathi Wightman joined the teams over the weekend. Their daughter, Danielle, is on the volleyball team.

Members of the Ed Clark family of Fortville, Indiana, are spending their annual fall vacation at the Windermere. They love Mackinac, and have made many friends over the years.

Annual visitors to Mackinac and the Windermere are Bill and Ann Taylor of Delta, Ohio. They arrived Friday, September 26, with donations for the Christmas Bazaar, which Ann and her granddaughter, Jacqulyn, plan to attend. Their daughter, Tammie, and Jacqulyn joined Ann and Bill over the weekend.

Rosie Charnes and her son arrived on Mackinac Monday, September 29. They will spend two weeks at Rosie's cottage in Harrisonville.

Brian and Candi Dunnigan of Grass Lake closed their Easterly cottage over the weekend.

The Michigan Municipal League convention will take place at Grand Hotel Wednesday, October 1.
