Leora Thon

Leora Thon Leora Thon Leora Ann Thon, 62, of Cedarville, died Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born May 21, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, to Joseph Stanley and Irene Mary (nee Tiedel) Boike.

Ms. Thon grew up in Chicago and moved to Cedarville in 1968, where she owned and operated Lee's Beauty Shop in Cedarville for many years. She later worked at the Howard Johnson Motel in St. Ignace and most recently at the Les Cheneaux Club on Marquette Island, until her illness this year.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Hessel. She created the Lisa Winandy Scholarship at Cedarville High School, which gives a scholarship each year.

Mrs. Thon was always willing to help others, friends said; she made friends easily and had a nurturing spirit. She enjoyed gardening, painting, decorating, building birdhouses, and watching "her" Detroit Tigers.

She is survived by a brother, Alan Boike of Sault Ste. Marie, a stepbrother, Paul Boike of Clearwater, Florida, two stepsisters and their families, Florence and George Kolb of Arizona and Marlene and William Tolliver of Kinross; a daughter-in-law, Margaret "Sister" Doud of St. Ignace; a granddaughter, Sandi Thon; and nieces and nephews Adam, Pat, Mike, Sylvia, Claude, Billy, Chris, Michael, Doug, Renee, Victor, David, Lois, Greg, Kasha, Julie, and Kris.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. "Sonny" Thon Sr., her parents, and a daughter, Lisa Irene Winandy.

Services were held Tuesday, September 30, at 11 a.m. at Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville, conducted by Father George V. Vaniyepurackal.
