McCain's Fade Could Help State Democrats
      Republican John McCain's abrupt, ill-advised Michigan fade could be good news for Democrats down the ticket, maybe even for Supreme Court candidate Diane Marie Hathaway, partisan-nominated contender on the ill-named "bipartisan" ballot.

      Checking out a variety of small engines last month at the Chippewa County Fair, Bruce Zimmerman of St. Ignace was a participant. Mr. Zimmerman does many demonstrations during the day.A young man who explained how each engine runs and its horsepower is Jean-Luc Runkle, 10, a student at Maplewood Baptist Academy in Kinross.

Brevort
      This week promises to be milder and more colorful as the fall season progresses. The bows have been sighted in, as bow hunting season begins. Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort was the scene of the Three Lakes Conference for the Lutheran churches in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Twenty-eight pastors, lay people, delegates, and visitors took part.

      With a little tinge of frost on a few mornings, Mother Nature is wearing her fall attire. One of the prettiest times of the year in our tiny towns is occurring, as folks hurry to get up the last cord of wood, winterize so the pipes don't freeze, and move things around in the garage to get the car in once again.

      Cooler temperatures are coming into the area. The tree color is spectacular in many places. Our tomato bushes have many "almost ripe" tomatoes on them and I hope we can rescue them before it gets too cold. I received an e-mail this week from a happy young fisherman by the name of Derek Burger. Derek caught this beautiful pike last week while fishing with his father.

      Hello, everyone, and welcome hunters! Bird, bear, and bow season is here, and the mild weather we're having this week makes hunting enjoyable. Not that hunters complain about the weather, but it's nice to come in from the woods, dry and warm.

      Now is the time to take a ride in northern Michigan, to view the beautiful changing colors of the fall season. Halloweeen decorations are already being displayed in all neighborhoods. What fun it is to see the sights. Linda and Alex Fisher reported the turnout for the eighth annual Bob-O Classic was a success.

      Dear Mark: As a video poker player, if finding a 9/6 machine is not too tough, finding one that pays 2 coins (for each coin bet) on two pair is even tougher. Most machines look like 9/6 but 1 coin returned for two pairs.
