Community Marks Season With Bayside Fall Fest
     With the upcoming presidential election just weeks away, Wendy Belonga (kneeling), an employee at the Village Inn Restaurant in St. Ignace, created this politicsinspired scenario that took first place in this year's scarecrow contest. Senator Hillary Clinton (right) pushes Senator Barack Obama toward the Village Inn Guy. Mr. Obama is pulling on the arm of the Village Inn Guy, representing the public, she said, which is being pulled in all directions during the campaign. Senator John McCain (second from left) also pulls on the arm of Village Inn Guy, while trying to keep his distance from President George Bush (left). The scarecrow contest is organized by the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce.

Teachers Sign 4-year Contract
St. Ignace
      A pay increase for educators and an insurance cost-sharing plan are a few of the changes written into the new four-year teacher's contract that was ratified Thursday, September 25, by the St. Ignace Education Association and adopted by the St. Ignace Area Schools Board of Education four days later, at a special meeting Monday, September 29.

DDA One Step Closer
Clark Township
      A resolution of intent to establish a Downtown Development Authority (DDA) was adopted by the Clark Township board Thursday, September 18. The support came at the urging of resident Rick Shapero. A public hearing is planned for January 8, 2009, to review the area that would be included in the DDA district and a proposed ordinance that would create it.

Tribe Lists Budget Cuts
      Budget shortfalls for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians have so far been reduced to $8 million for 2008, and $1.5 million for next year, according to the tribe, which has released a list of cost cutting measures that its chairman and board of directors have put in place.

      Two issues brought concerned and angry residents and members of the Special Events Committee to the St. Ignace City Council meeting Monday evening, October 6, to argue for and against summer fireworks displays and to complain about utility tree trimming.

County Commission Considers Staffing Partnership for Care of Animals, Airport Needs
Fuel Sales Down at County Airport
      A staffing partnership under consideration by Mackinac County commissioners would aid in the care of animals at the county shelter, as fewer pets are being adopted and more animals are being abandoned. A growing number of residents no longer can afford to care for pets, officials say.

      Starting Thursday, October 9, St. Ignace's Mackinac Straits Hospital and Health Center will offer many cardiac services on a weekly basis, eliminating the necessity for travel to other cities for such treatment.

St. Ignace Car Dealership Building Demolished
      Demolition of the Mackinac Ford Sales garage and show room on US-2 near St. Ignace began early Monday, October 6, and was finished the following day. Demolition was slowed Monday afternoon by gusty winds, said Wade Huskey of Art Huskey and Sons Excavating of St. Ignace.

President Bush Signs Great Lakes Compact
      President George Bush signed the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact October 3, endorsing protections for the Great Lakes that represent a decade's worth of work by conservationists, government agencies, businesses, the public, and local, state, and federal leaders.
