Checking out a variety of small engines last month at the Chippewa County Fair, Bruce Zimmerman of St. Ignace was a participant. Mr. Zimmerman does many demonstrations during the day.A
young man who explained how each engine runs and its horsepower is Jean-Luc Runkle, 10, a student at Maplewood Baptist Academy in Kinross. He has been a visitor of Ken Parr since he was four. Mr. Parr listens and understands Jean's love of motors. At last year's fair, Jean- Luc was surprised with his own engine, which he fires up each day. He also attended a fair dinner and received a trophy. He is the son of Sheryl and "Scoot" Runkle.

Pamela Blum, formerly of St. Ignace, and Jim Johnson were recently recognized for their efforts with the Red Cross during hurricanes Gustav and Ike by the mayor and city council of Laredo, Texas. The pair drove through eight states and crossed more than 4,000 miles to take water and supplies to people stranded along the coast. They spent a couple of days in a massive shelter in San Antonio, which held 5,000 people. It was run like a town, Ms. Blum reported, with transportation, a communication system, meals, a medical clinic, and security.
