Brevort

This week promises to be milder and more colorful as the fall season progresses. The bows have been sighted in, as bow hunting season begins.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort was the scene of the Three Lakes Conference for the Lutheran churches in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Twenty-eight pastors, lay people, delegates, and visitors took part. The ladies of the church served a full-course dinner after the meeting, with varied conversations not of church business but remembering the radio programs with the Shadow, Green Hornet, Jack Benny, Fibber Magee and Molly, and Dark Shadows. Did we date ourselves, or what? It was fun talking of "the old days."

I finally got to meet Sonja Clegg, the granddaughter of one of Brevort's earliest settlers, Leander and Augusta Gustafson. Her mother and father were Julia and Erick Lofdahl. Julia was a sister to Hulda Carlson. I've been going through old pictures and ran across many of Julia and her family.

Our old friends and former neighbors of 35 years ago, Inga and Bob Batterson, were visitors in our area this past weekend. Inga and Bob live in Hillsdale, and their two children, Arlene and family and Timmy and family, live close by. Inga and Bob are great-grandparents, as Arlene is a grandmother. We remember those kids as they rode the bus to Gros Cap for school.

While walking the beach last weekend, Alan and Karen Southland observed a deer charging out of the woods, with a coyote on its heels. The deer swam out into the lake, while the coyote walked along the beach watching. The fate of the deer is not known, as Karen and Al watched it until it was out of sight. It was some time ago when Charlie Movalson had the same experience of seeing a deer run out of the woods and jump in the lake, but he never knew what was chasing it.

Joyce and Tom Gustafson's granddaughter, Sarah Campbell of Saratoga Springs, New York, has been chosen out of 400 applicants of high performance hockey to attend the North American Hockey Academy in Stowe, Vermont. This is a two-year program from October to March of the school year. She will attend her regular school in the other months. Sarah is 16 years old and the daughter of Steve and April Lynn Campbell.

Lorie Quigley and Joe Stewart were taking their last beach walk before returning to Florida when the dog, Dodger, connected with a red fox. The fox was chasing Dodger, who is not afraid of much. Joe and Lorie intervened, and the fox went back into the woods.

Don Dickmann and Kathleen McKevitt were at their vacation home for the weekend. They were enjoying walks with the dog, Benny.

Birthday greetings to Ray Baron and Lawrence O'Boyle October 19.

Happy anniversary to Barb and Mike Lehto October 15.

Please keep Jean Bentley, Sharon Nelson (Del), and Charlie Dowd in your thoughts and prayers.

Enjoy your week.
