Big Plays Lift Cheboygan Over St. Ignace in Final Straits Area Conference Game
The Saints' Rob Robinson (30) receives a handoff from quarterback Gerrit Mortensen (3), as Stefan Saffian (84), Anthony Lester (7), Tyler Oja (28), Jimmy Campbell (52) and Andy Tamlyn (55) clear a path for the senior, who led the Saints with 122 rushing yards. St. Ignace held a 57-45 margin in offensive plays, but could only muster two touchdowns in a 41-14 defeat, its first this year, to its Straits Area Conference rival, the Cheboygan Chiefs, in Cheboygan Friday, October 3. It was the last time the two teams may meet as conference rivals, as the SAC is scheduled to be disbanded.
Cheboygan's offense generated big play after big play for its fifth win of the season, gaining 36 yards or more on six plays during the game. The Chiefs used offensive plays of 48, 47, 45, 42, and 36 that resulted in touchdowns.
With a packed house at Western Avenue Field in Cheboygan, the Chiefs (5-1 overall) scored two first-quarter touchdowns on a Drew Ingram 12-yard run, and a Miles Brown score from four yards out. The senior also added the twopoint conversion, for a 14-0 lead with 2:58 left in the first 12 minutes.
Ingram rambled 41 yards before the first touchdown and Brown dashed 47 yards prior to the second score.
The Chiefs third touchdown came on a 99-yard drive that took seven plays, which was capped off on an Austin Blaskowski-to-Dylan Brandt 29-yard scoring pass. Zach Engstrom kicked the extra point to take a 21-0-halftime advantage.
St. Ignace's first-half scoring threat ended at the 12-yard line after a missed field goal.
The Saints (5-1 overall) took the second half kickoff and were forced to punt, but Austin St. Louis recovered the fumble on a muffed catch by Cheboygan at the nineyard line, however, the Chiefs' defense stalled the Saints' scoring opportunity.
Cheboygan marched 79 yards on four plays with Blaskowski scoring on a one-yard quarterback sneak. Engstrom added the extra points to build the Chiefs' lead to 28-0 at the 7:48 mark of the third quarter.
Saints senior Rob Robinson, who carred 20 times for 122 yards, scored on a 34-yard run for a 28-6 score at the 6:39 mark.
St. Ignace missed an opportunity for another score when a 57-yard scoring pass was dropped. On the ensuing play, the Saints fumbled and the Chiefs' Ingram returned the ball to the one-yard line.
Cheboygan's offense punched in a touchdown on a Brandt run and, with Engstrom's extra point kick, the Chiefs extended their lead to 35-6.
Cheboygan's final touchdown came on a Dan Crusoe three-yard run.
The Saints, on their ensuing possession, drove 88 yards on eight plays and scored from the threeyard line on a Robinson-to-Gerrit Mortensen hand-off. Mortensen and St. Louis combined on a twopoint conversion.
The Saints tallied 316 total yards, 169 rushing, and 147 passing, while the Chiefs totaled 516 yards, 451 rushing, and 65 passing.
St. Ignace, which needs one more win to qualify for the state playoffs, will host Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils (2-4) in the annual homecoming game at Saints Field Friday, October 10. The Chiefs will host Rudyard Friday, October 10.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 35-7 loss to the Petoskey Northmen (6-0).
