Mill Creek's Discovery Park Receives Excellence Award
      The revitalized Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park in Mackinaw City received the Quest for Excellence Institutional Achievement Award by the Michigan Museum Association. The award was accepted by Steve Brisson, curator of Mackinac State Historic Parks, at a special awards ceremony during the association's annual conference in Traverse City September 25.

      A breaking and entering occurred at the Lockview Restaurant on West Portage Street in Sault Ste. Marie August 10, between 11:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., and a safe containing an undisclosed amount of money was stolen.

Community Television Channel 2 Returns
     The community cable television channel two will be back on the air in St. Ignace listing nonprofit events and meetings. The school anticipates the channel will be operational by Monday, October 20. After about six months of seeing nothing but a black television screen on the channel, viewers again will be able to view local information, including St. Ignace Area Schools' lunch menu. The system's 20-year-old software has been replaced with an enhanced program that offers graphics and is much easier to use, said Kathy Marshall (pictured) of the school district. The system, offered by the local cable provider and supported by the city and the schools, is operated by Mrs. Marshall. To have nonprofit events and meetings posted on the channel, call Mrs. Marshall at 643- 8500 or Kathy Cryderman at City Hall at 643-8545.

Several Thefts Reported on Curtis Boats
      The Mackinac County Sheriff's Office is requesting assistance from the community in investigating a larceny that took place in the Village of Curtis between Monday, September 22, and Wednesday, September 24, when personal property was removed from several pontoon boats docked on the shore of South Manistique Lake.

Recreation Dept. To Promote Hockey Program
Concerned About Decline's Impact on Arena Revenues
      A joint effort between the St. Ignace Recreation Department and the Hockey Association is hoped to introduce more young players to hockey, stop the decline in participation, and raise funds to lower youth costs to play the sport at Little Bear East Arena.

Crash in Brevort Twp. Claims Life of EUP Woman
      A 34-year-old woman died in a single vehicle crash in Brevort Township at approximately 12:25 a.m. Sunday, October 12. Jacqueline Rae Leapley of Cedarville and Bay Mills, was traveling southbound on M-123 alone when her Ford Explorer ran off the road and rolled. She was pronounced dead at the scene as the result of injuries sustained from the crash.

St. Ignace Council Is Paid for September Meetings
      In September, payment to members of the St. Ignace City Council for attending meeting and events totaled $2,950. Meeting salaries are set, while no rules constitute what events are eligible for payment. Council members are paid $70 for regular meetings, which are held on the first and third Monday of each month.

Genetic Studies Now Used by DNR To Advance Wildlife Management
      The shooting suspect knew investigators were closing in. The suspect tried to dispose of all the evidence, but when law enforcement officers showed up with a search warrant, they found trace amounts of blood on the suspect's clothing. Authorities sent a sample to the laboratory for DNA analysis.
