We celebrated Columbus Day Monday, October 13. It's also a time to remember on Columbus Day 1977, when Alvin Gustafson and his son, Gary Gustafson, tragically lost their lives while commercial fishing in Lake Michigan, east of Brevort. We remember them both fondly.

Paul and Tammy Shepard of Sangor, California, are the parents of a son, Dillon Michael, born Wednesday, October 1. He weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces and measured 20.25 inches in length at birth.

Thora and Jack Shepard, accompanied by Barb Merchant and Jim Smith of Indian River, spent the weekend at Trout Lake. The boat and dock came out of the water for the season, and the woodshed got a new supply of fireplace logs.

Thora is the consummate decorator, and has begun outfitting the house for Halloween. The Shepard garden is winding down, and the last of the corn is soon to be picked. Lots of pickles were made, and beans put up for the winter.

Tracy Movalson has returned home after a long weekend trip to Door County, WIsconsin.

Bob Corrigan, a former Brevorter many years ago, dropped by Saturday, October 11, for a brief visit to catch up on the goings on in Brevort. Bob tidied up the graves of family members resting there.

Joe Chalmers was looking up phone numbers and happened upon the name of his old boss of 40 years ago, when he worked at Vlasic Foods in West Bloomfield. A call was made and an invitation to dinner ensued for Saturday evening at Joe and Sharon Chalmers' home in Brevort. It was a very pleasant evening.

Jim and Ann Dyer attended the memorial service for Mike Walsh at the Epoufette Cemetery Sunday, October 12.

Mary Ann and Larry First are entertaining guests from Idaho this week. Ron Hunter is an old Air Force buddy of Larry's from 50 years ago. Larry and Mary Ann have enjoyed showing Ron and his wife, Mickie, around our beautiful fall scenery. Mickie, an avid photographer, said their part of Idaho has no color in the autumn.

Jaimie Rogers Straus of Council Bluff, Colorado, told her mother, Jackie Rogers, of watching an approaching snowstorm coming over the mountains, with ominous black clouds ladened with the "white stuff."

Tracy and I walked Chippie Monday morning and our sweatshirts were way too warm for the summerlike weather. Tracy was talking to her friend in Montana, who was also walking with a heavy coat, boots, and a wool cap on. We laughed.

Sarah Campbell, granddaughter of Tom and Joyce Gustafson, played in hockey tournaments in Montreal and Toronto this past weekend. Her team was victorious. Sarah scored five times. I'd like to think we could look for Sarah playing on the USA Olympic team.

Joyce Gustafson planted a peony tree this week, and picked a handful of grapes off her three-year-old grapevines. Dave and I harvested the grapes in Louise Hagen's garden this week for Anne Andersen. There will be plenty for juice and jelly.

The Trinity Lutheran Church ladies served the Lions Club dinner at the fellowship hall Monday, October 13.

Dave and I went on one last fishing venture on Big Brevort Lake Sunday afternoon, October 12. Rick and Gloria Webber joined us. We didn't have much luck. The boat will come out of the water this week for the winter.

Lisa and Andy Movalson and their dog spent the weekend at the Movalson cottage on Lake Michigan. Hunting was the name of the game, especially partridge hunting.

The junior high volleyball team won third place in a tournament in Sault Ste. Marie Saturday, October 11. Kristi Gustafson is a team member. Congratulations to all of the girls.

Remember the harvest dinner at Zion Lutheran Church in Allenville Sunday, October 19.

Happy birthday to Marilee Barthelemy October 24, and Mike Gustafson and Kenny Smith October 25.
