The state and county elections this year fall on Tuesday, November 5, two weeks from next Tuesday. The county candidates on both tickets are comparatively well known to the rank and file of the voters, most of whom have already made up their minds as to how their ballots will be marked. Michael McGrath heads the ticket for sheriff, one of the best known men in the county and known as one of the squarest. George A. Rapin is again before the people for county clerk.

With Prentiss M. Brown, the present prosecuting attorney and again the Democratic candidate for that office, Mackinac county has every reason to be satisfied, for he has so ably, courageously, honestly, and economically discharged his duties that the opposition decided that it would be useless to pit any man against him.

The crew of the Chief Wawatam demonstrated their patriotism by the purchase of $3,450 worth of Liberty Bonds of the 4th issue and giving $200 towards the patriotic fund. The crew is 91 per cent loyal in the loan drive.

The board of health closed the schools and the Grand theatre [St. Ignace] this week as a precaution against a grippe epidemic, hence teachers and pupils are enjoying a holiday.

John Franks of Mackinac Island left Tuesday for Ann Arbor, where he will join the training detachment of the University of Michigan.

G.N. Efalaw of Engadine has rented the Barnes Hotel from Mrs. John Smith, and assumed possession last Thursday.

Gros Cap: The farmers are all busy digging potatoes. The crop is fairly good this year.

W.P. (Cannon Ball Bill) Chambers of the Island was caller in the city Wednesday, taking in the Allenville fair that day.

Robert Davis of the St. Ignace Greenhouse was elected president of the Mackinac County Chamber of Commerce to succeed Marvin Winkelman, retired.

A lonely crow, which has been hanging around LaSalle elementary school, takes delight in frightening youngsters as they approach the school. Several days ago, two little girls were approaching school when the crow flew down and struck one in the back of the head. She cried, terrorized, and Mrs. Don Wachter came out of her home to see what was the matter. She could hardly believe the child's story, but just then the crow struck her.

Approval of a three-mill tax levy for a period up to five years was given by St. Ignace school district voters Tuesday in a a special meeting. The proposition is designed to finance a building and site sinking fund, which will decrease the amount of money to be borrowed when a new district high school is approved.

Roof's Wigwam restaurant on West US-2 has been purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Bentgen from Mr. and Mrs. Day Roof. The cocktail lounge has been purchased by Jack Hopkins and son of Grand Rapids.

The Saints took to the Western Avenue field in Cheboygan Friday night to raise their record to two wins against three defeats with a 24-0 win over the Chiefs. The Saints' defensive team, lead by senior Roger Beers, performed a masterful job keeping the Chiefs' quarterback Tom Rauch penned in.

Great Lakes and Inland Waterways magazine this week carried an illustrated story on the new Mackinac Islander which was delivered to the Arnold Line last summer.

Friday and Saturday of this week have been set for an opening celebration at the Taylor's 66 station on North State Street in St. Ignace.

Mackinac Island: Mrs. Harriet Back Hogue has sold the Carriage Lantern buildings to the Clyde

Nearys. This was the last summer for the famous Carriage Lantern Tea Room.

On Friday, November 7, St. Ann'es parish will hold their fall bazaar at the Community hall.

Mackinac Island: R.D. Musser left Tuesday for Lake Forest, IL, where they opened the winter offices of the Grand Hotel.

The Saints spoiled Che - boygan's homecoming Fri day night, whipping the Chiefs 28-0. Coaches Gallagher, Perry, and Pierson can especially be pleased with their defense, as it came up with its third shutout in five games. Jim Prout led the defense with 14 combinations. Butch Calcaterra again led the rushing attack with 100 yards in 17 tries.

St. Ignace Saints girls basketball team won its third straight game as they beat Newberry 35- 31 Monday, October 8. Scorers in the game were: Barb LaTour - 20; Carol Gustafson - 10; Jenny Russel - 3; Kim Scofield - 2.

The [St. Ignace] Fire De - partment was called to Mayor Walker's home last Saturday evening about 8:45 p.m. when sparks from a small electric utensil used for heating water caused a fire. Damage to the kitchen was suffered. Smoke filled the rest of the house, as well.

The Mackinac Straits Hospital Auxiliary held its annual fall Pot Luck dinner meeting last Thursday and Hospital Admin istrator John Tobin spoke briefly on the ever increasing need for additional 24 regular units and 12 self-care units.

A Rudyard woman and her young son presumably drowned Saturday, October 9, during a weekend getaway at a Cedarville motel they chose because it offered a swimming pool.

Monte J. Endres has been named executive secretary of the Mackinac Bridge, assuming the post he has temporarily filled since the beginning of the year, replacing longtime Executive Secretary Walt North, who retired January 1.

Mackinaw City's downtown improvements and the restoration project at the light station on St. Helena Island are among the winners of this year's Keep Michigan Beautiful Awards.

A swan flew into a light pole on the Mackinac Bridge and died Monday, October 11, leaving officials to wonder if foul weather led the bird astray. The dead swan was taken to DNR offices in Sault Ste. Marie, where it is scheduled to be stuffed and used for educational purposes, officials said.

A St. Ignace sixth grader may face a misdemeanor for smoking in the principal's room.

In August, new Cedarville football Coach Randy Schaedig had a gleam in his eye about his 1993 team. An Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference championship for the first time since 1981 and maybe the first state playoff spot in the school's history were on the minds of the Trojans. On Friday, October 8, the Trojans reached the first of those goals with two second-half touchdowns that broke an 8-8 halftime tie and gave them a 24- 8 conference win over Pickford.
