Downtown Ash Trees Pulled
Ash trees that line State Street in St. Ignace, including those between Truckey and Goudreau streets, were removed Monday, October 13, and will be replaced by Japanese lilac and maple trees. The Downtown Development Authority project is part of a plan to eliminate ash trees, which are susceptible to the tree killing beetle Emerald ash borer, and to plant shorter vegetation downtown. The new trees will be decorated with lights that will remain in place year around. A three-man crew from the department of Public Works worked on the project, including Gary Bigelow (left), Clifford Belonga, who operated the backhoe, and Brian Peterson (not pictured). |
