An exhibit by former Life photographer Marion Strahl Boyer opened Wednesday, October 1, in Alberta House Arts Center in Sault Ste. Marie and will be in place through October 30.

Ms. Strahl was born near Escanaba and was graduated with an art degree from the University of Wisconsin. She worked for the Escanaba Daily Press before going on to study with photographer Ansel Adams in Los Angeles, California. She was one of the first women photographers hired by Life Magazine, working in both Washington, D.C., and in Hollywood. After World War II, she worked in the Panama Canal Zone, moving to Sault Ste. Marie in the '60s. She also worked in Juneau, Alaska.

In Sault Ste. Marie, she photographed the construction of the International Bridge and the Poe Lock, and spent 10 years teaching English and journalism at Sault Area High School. Her photographs record the Upper Peninsula during the worst of the Depression, Hollywood during the glamour years, and the Washington political scene. They cover a span of more than years.

Alberta House is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
