More ... Thomas North of St. Ignace is being charged with representing himself as the incumbent in his campaign for judge of the 92nd District Court. His opponent, Judge Beth Gibson of Newberry, the actual incumbent in the election, filed the complaint in July and contends that it is Mr. North's use of the title "judge" in his campaign materials that implies he is the incumbent. More ... Natural gas, propane, and fuel oil costs are expected to increase this winter, reports the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). "All fuel costs are going up this winter," said commission spokeswoman Judy Palnau. "Prices have been going up over the last several years; that's a trend we've been seeing" in Michigan. More ... The Eastern Upper Peninsula Regional Planning and Development Commission is seeking to make M-134 a state heritage route. Designating the stretch of road along the Lake Huron shore between I-75 and DeTour Village would allow for special funding to maintain and update the road and its surrounding area. More ... Off to pasture, Mackinac Island horses crossed the gangplank and stepped onto the Mill Slip dock after completing the 40-minute boat trip to St. Ignace Wednesday, October 15. Albert "Buck" Sharrow (pictured) leads two horses owned by Island West Bluff resident Mike Young to a waiting trailer. They will pasture in Frankenmuth for the winter. Other horses also made the trip, including those from Chambers Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. Jim Chambers from the company said their horses will winter near Pickford and begin returning to the Island in mid-May. Horses will continue to leave the Island through December, with about 20 remaining there over the winter. More ... Saturday night fireworks received the support of City Council Monday, October 20, and a $2,500 financial contribution to help fund the proposed summer event. The Downtown Development Authority pledged its support with a $5,000 contribution earlier this month. The city contribution will be in addition to its sponsorship of the July 4 fireworks show. More ... Contributions supporting downtown St. Ignace events were approved Friday, October 10, when the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) adopted its 2009 budget. The authority agreed to support the marina with $30,000 in funding spread over the next three years. More ... New trees were slipped into the ground Tuesday, October 14, and Wednesday, October 15, along State Street in St. Ignace, replacing ash trees that are vulnerable to the beetle emerald ash borer. Mackinac Island is pledging continued partnership with Michigan.org, a state-operated tourism Web site, that plans to put more emphasis on regional marketing and attract more out-ofstate visitors to the area this winter.
