Give True Commuters a Break
      To the Editor: I've been reading in the past weeks about the commuter cards the Mackinac Bridge Authority issues. I'm a commuter. I'm a year-around resident of Mackinac County who crosses the bridge to get to work, and crosses again to get home, as do many others who work or own businesses, or go to school. We are the "true" commuters.

Questioning Placement of Election Signs
      To the Editor: By the time you read this letter, everyone will have made their choice of elected officials for federal, state, and county offices. Prior to this election, there has been a barrage of campaign signs scattered all over to include the hill in front of the Mackinac County Airport terminal.

$280 Per Mile Fuel Service Charge
      To the Editor: Recently I helped a neighbor clear out material from a house where the husband died and the children were helping their mother. I drove my pickup to the landfill site in Dafter and paid the minimum charge of one ton for 700 pounds of material. I figured my load to be average of others doing similar disposal (mostly small contractors).

Road to Fort de Buade, Revisited
      To the Editor: About 85 years ago, the Fort Field was our playground. The trenches, hidden beyond the knoll at the far end of the field, we believe were part of Fort de Buade. These trenches were deep and wide with timbers that supported the sidewalls still visible.
