Old-Fashioned Christmas Is Planned in Les Cheneaux
      Strolling carolers, tree lighting ceremonies, roasting chestnuts, and the arrival of Santa will be part of the Les Cheneaux Old Fashioned Christmas celebration. Holiday events are set for the three weekends following Thanksgiving and include November 28 through November 30, December 5 through December 7, and December 12 through December 14.

Turkey Shoot Will Test Skills November 8
      A turkey shoot that will test shooters' skills will be held at Mackinac Straits Shooters Association's shooting range on Castle Rock Road at M-123 near Moran, at noon Saturday, November 8. The event is open to the public. Prizes will be awarded to the top seven shooters.

Naturalists Host Phinney November 11
      Dee Phinney of Curtis will present an illustrated program called "Searching for Wild Orchids" Tuesday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Great Lakes Forestry Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Ms. Phinney has photographed and documented many of the species that grow in the Great Lakes region, particularly in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

      The support group Mackinac Parents for Autistic Children (MAC PAC) attended the Autism Speaks Walk for Autism Sunday, October 12, at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The group raised $1,250.

Cedarville Student Council Hosts Fundraiser During Conferences
      Les Cheneaux Student Council is having a fundraising truckload sale with Schwans during parent teacher conferences Friday, November 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the school. Items can be purchased off the truck, with proceeds going to the student council.

Les Cheneaux Historical Group Auctions Christmas Trees
      The Les Cheneaux Historical Association's annual Christmas Open House and Christmas Tree Auction will take place in November and December. Three-foot artificial trees are now available for anyone who would like to volunteer to decorate a tree for the fundraiser auction. The decorated Christmas trees will then be on display during the Christmas Open House.

Youth Archery Club Competes in Festival
     Straits Shooters 4-H Club competed in the Festival of the Pines Archery Tournament Saturday, September 20, in Lake City. Participants included (from left) Garrett Horn, Andrew Will, Nick Grogan, Joshua Lennington, Michael Lennington, Andrea Perry, Jessica Ender. Award winners included: Garrett Horn in second place in the 3-D unsighted category and second place in the unsighted target event in the 9-11 age division; Andrew Will came in second place in both the 3-D event and the target event for 9-11 in the sighted division; Jessica Ender placed second in the 12-14 age category for the target event. Dinner To Benefit Christmas Charities
      A lasagna dinner will be Sunday, November 16, at 5:30 p.m. at Moose Lodge 999 in St. Ignace to benefit the Mackinac County Children's Toy Drive and Moose Lodge Christmas food baskets. Bring a toy for a chance to win a door prize. The evening will also include a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Yoder Wins Best Costume
     Local equestrian Sara Bailey Yoder at the competitive horse arena with her registered Haflinger, Medina's Miracle or "Mira," as part of the recent Great Lakes Haflinger competition Friday, October 10, through Sunday, October 12, at Michigan State University. Miss Yoder and her horse, "Mira," were presented with a First Place award for best costume design for the theme "Haflinger in Paradise." She also competed in several other English equitation events, where she received Champion Reserve in the youth dressage category.
