Hunters Asked To Save Duck Wings For LSSU Student's Study
A Lake Superior State University student is asking duck hunters to contribute duck wings for study data this fall.
Jesse Kamps, a senior in fisheries and wildlife management from Wyoming, needs wings from ducks that hunters shoot this fall in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. The wings will be used for a study on duck harvest.
"I'm looking at different aspects of the harvest, especially how the location and time of season change the statistics of the harvest," Mr. Kamps said. "From each bird, I need one wing, where it meets the body. I just want wings from birds taken in the St. Marys River basin and not the entire U.P."
The study area includes the far eastern end of the peninsula, with the eastern border being the U.S.- Canada international boundary. It includes the St. Marys River from Sault Ste. Marie to DeTour, and also an area inland as far as a line approximately 10 miles west of and running parallel to I-75 from Sault Ste. Marie to St. Ignace.
Collection barrels will be set up along the river at 9 Mile Road, at the Charlotte River boat launch, the Munuscong River State Campground, and at the rest area on the west side of I-75 at the Mackinac Bridge, Mr. Kamps said. Hunters can also send him an e-mail message to arrange to have the wings picked up.
"For data, I just need the date of harvest and the approximate location, for example, 'Munuscong Bay,'" he said. "I don't need GPS coordinates to hunters' favorite spots."
Hunters can include the harvest date and location on a slip of paper in a plastic bag with the wings.
Duck season in Michigan's U.P. opened October 4 and closes December 2.
