2008-11-06 / Social

A turkey shoot that will test shooters' skills will be held at Mackinac Straits Shooters Association's shooting range on Castle Rock Road at M-123 near Moran, at noon Saturday, November 8.

The event is open to the public. Prizes will be awarded to the top seven shooters.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5114 of St. Ignace is offering the event, which costs $25 per person. Participants can enter up to three times and each is allowed three shots per entry.

Shooters must use only center fire rifles and will be required to aim at a target 100 yards away in an off-hand standing position. Scopes and open sights are allowed.

Safety equipment, such as shooting glasses and hearing protection, is required.

The list of prizes is topped by a new bolt-action 0.22 magnum rifle for the first place finisher.

The phrase "turkey shoot" derived from its origins of using live turkeys as targets, but today, paper targets or other manmade targets are used.
