Trojans Blank Snowbirds 30-0; Earn Trip To Division 8 District Finals

The Cedarville Trojans improved their unbeaten streak to 10-0 and advanced to the second round of the Division 8 regional playoffs with a 30-0 shutout of the Gaylord St. Mary Snowbirds at Cedarville Friday, October 31. The win sets the stage for a second round matchup with the St. Ignace Saints Friday, November 7, at 7 p.m. It will be the first time these two teams have faced each other since 1951, and the first time in the playoffs.
Trojans Head Coach Scott Barr said he was very pleased with the way his team played against the Snowbirds, giving specific credit to his defense, which he said was all around solid, working hard to not allow the Snowbirds to advance on the field.
"It felt pretty good," the first-year Cedarville head coach said. "Just hard work and sticking to our game plan" helped the Trojans win.
Taylor Smith (82) is tackled by a Gaylord St. Mary player during the Trojans win over the Snowbirds. Coach Barr said he is looking forward to facing the Saints and thinks it will be a high impact, high scoring game.
"I'd trade the perfect record for a win this weekend," he said. "We're only focusing on one game at a time."
The Trojans scored first off a 90- yard drive with 5:09 left in the quarter.
Zach McFarlane ran for 12 yards, as well as juggled a catch, to give the Trojans 17 more yards on the drive. Quarterback C.J. Paquin connected twice with Luke Murray for a total of 53 yards, including a 27-yard drive to the end zone. The Trojans failed on the extra point conversion, as the kick sailed wide of the field goal.
On the following drive, the Snowbirds got as far as the Trojan's 41-yard line before being forced to punt on fourth down.
The Trojans then drove the ball 94 yards back to score again with 1:15 left in the quarter. Paquin passed to Murray, who ran the ball 36 yards for the Trojans' second touchdown of the night. A two-point conversion was denied by the Snowbirds defense.
The Trojans' Luke Murray (33) goes high in the air to catch a pass against the Snowbirds. The Snowbirds started off the second quarter by driving the ball to just inches short of a first down at the Trojans' 10-yard line, only to turn the ball over on downs.
The Trojans offense responded by driving the ball back 90 yards to score again.
Paquin carried the ball for 20 yards, then handed off to Tyler Anderson for another 15 yards on the next play. A few plays later, with no receivers open, Paquin scampered 40 yards for a touchdown at 8:57. The Snowbirds again denied the two point conversion.
The Snowbirds punted to the Trojans from their own 36-yard line after a failed drive. The Trojans then drove the ball back to the Snowbirds 16-yard line, only to fumble for a Snowbirds recovery.
The Trojans defense responded by only allowing the Snowbirds to gain two yards, forcing yet another punt.
On the ensuing offensive drive, Trojans quarterback Paquin eluded two tacklers and connected on a pass with Anderson, moving the Trojans to the Snowbirds' threeyard line. McFarlane ran the ball into the end zone with 1:37 left in the half to put the Trojans up 24-0.
With just under a minute left in the half, the Trojans recovered a Snowbirds fumble at the Snowbirds' 46-yard line and drove to within 15 yards of the end zone in seven plays, but the Snowbirds denied the Trojans a score this time. A Paquin pass was intercepted in the end zone with 2.8 seconds left to end the half.
The Snowbirds drove to the Trojans' 45-yard line to begin the second half, however, a fumble that was recovered by Cedarville stalled the other promising drive.
Cedarville's McFarlane carried the ball twice to put the Trojans on the Snowbirds' 21-yard line. On the next play, Paquin connected with Murray in the end zone to give the Trojans their final touchdown of the night with 6:41 left in the quarter. The extra point kick went wide of the goal posts yet again.
The Trojan defense controlled the fourth quarter, recovering a Snowbirds fumble as well as forcing the Snowbirds to turn the ball over on downs three times.
The Trojans offense drove the ball to the Snowbirds' 13-yard line for a field goal attempt that went wide.
The Trojans totaled 165 yards rushing on the game and 327 yards in the air.
