Mortensen Named SAC Offensive Player of the Year

Junior Gerrit Mortensen of St. Ignace was selected as the Straits Area Conference (SAC) Offensive Player of the Year and senior Chad Anderson of Sault Ste. Marie was named the Defensive Player of the Year by conference coaches Sunday, October 26.

This was the final selection of all-conference players from the SAC as the league is set to disband after the 2008 season.

St. Ignace: First-team selections

were Rob Robinson at running back, Andy Tamlyn at offensive and defensive line, Tyler Oja at defensive back, Gunnar Zipp at linebacker, and Gerrit Mortensen at kicker and punter.

Second team honors went to Austin St. Louis at receiver, James Halberg at offensive line, Anthony Lester at defensive back, and Stefan Saffian at linebacker.

Receiving honorable mention were Billy Grogan, Mike Barthelemy, and John Evashevski.

Rudyard: Named to the firstteam

was Todd Anderson at receiver, Aaron Diepenhorst at offensive line, and Ben Harter at defensive line.

Second team went to Ron Coffey and Brady Burby at linebacker, Jared Clark at defensive back, and Ben Harter at offensive line.

Receiving honorable mention were Arik Hesselink, Daine Pavloski, Ben Gable, and Aaron Diepenhorst.

Newberry: Derek Dake was first-team linebacker; second team honors went to Steve Pinter at running back, Gavin Puckett at offensive and defensive line, John Schummer at defensive back, and Derek Dake at receiver.

Honorable mentions were Tony Carmody and Steve Pinter.

Sault Ste. Marie: Selected to the first team were Derek Horde at running back, Caleb Vizina at offensive line, and Tyler Wollan at defensive back.

Second team honors went to Eric Formolo at quarterback, Tim Hall at running back, Chris Shann and Brandon Garlinghouse at offensive line, Tyler Bouschor and Jeremy Peterson at defensive line, and Cody Gonyeau at punter.

Receiving honorable mention were Kyle Reattoir, Anthony Monterio, Coleman Hill, and Nick Sliger.

Cheboygan: First team honors went to Dylan Brandt at running back, Mike Wolf at receiver, Jeff Johnson and Matt Duffiney at offensive line, Dave Rush at defensive back, Tim Lytle and Miles Brown at linebacker, and Pat Harrington at defensive line.

Second team honors went to Austin Blaskowski at quarterback, Willie Neelis at running back, Zach Engstrom at kicker, and Leon Leach at defensive line.

Receiving honorable mention were Derrick Ferris, Nick Hancock, and Drew Ingram.
