Gros Cap Students Enjoy Wildlife Presentation
     Jeff Dykehouse, curator of natural history for Mackinac State Historic Parks, shows Gros Cap School students in kindergarten through fourth grade what a porcupine is and how it lives and eats. It was part of a one-hour program Thursday, November 6, explaining Michigan's abundant fresh water and wildlife resources that Mr. Dykehouse repeats 30 times at as many schools during the fall and winter months in the U.P. and the Lower Peninsula. Gros Cap's fifth through eighth grade students enjoyed the show next.

Outlook Is Positive for Snowmobiling
Snowfall, Cheaper Gas Expected To Boost Sport
      Although the season's peak is a couple of months off, Upper Peninsula snowmobilers already are checking out gear and planning where to go in a winter wonderland of 6,000 miles of trails in Michigan. Those in the industry are encouraged by a snowy winter forecast and lower gas prices than last year.

Shoebox Gift Drive Underway
      Local volunteers are collecting simple shoe box gifts including toiletries, toothbrushes, school supplies, and candy. The items will be to be sent to needy children around the world to be delivered at Christmas time as part of Operation Christmas Child.

Poll Workers Get Raise; Board Acts To Rid US-2 Site of Trash
Moran Township
      Moran Township's four election workers received a pay raise of $2, to $10 an hour, retroactive to the November 4 general election day, the township board decided Wednesday, November 5. The poll workers are Kathy Stephan, Mary Sue Kunze, Thora Shepard, and Christal Marshall. The election workers put in 14.5 hours on election day, during which 70.

Roy Roach Released on Bond
      Roy Roach of St. Ignace was released from Mackinac County Jail on a tether bond Wednesday, November 5, after Judge Beth Gibson reduced his bond from $1 million to $100,000 real property. Mr. Roach, 21, is being charged on three counts in the shooting death of Seth Tamlyn of St. Ignace October 28.

Mackinac Island Police To Charge for Breath Tests
      Individuals who are ordered by a court to take a preliminary breath test (PBT) at Mackinac Island Police Department will now be charged $5. The money raised will help replace the Island's PBT units, which cost $450 and are usually replaced each year, owing to frequent use.

Salmon Gets a Helping Hand
     This stuck salmon gets a helping human hand to make it upstream Thursday afternoon, November 5. Near death, like two other large fish that lay nearby, this approximately 28-inch long salmon was unable to power its way through about two inches of water, becoming lodged at the mouth of Hoban Creek where it flows into Lake Huron. Discovering the salmon's predicament, St. Ignace resident Donna Louwers carefully lifts the fish to deeper stream waters. The fish quickly recovered to continue its upstream journey. The fall salmon run in Michigan begins in October and ends in early November.

Unemployment Seminar Will Be Friday
      A seminar will take place for employers Friday, November 14, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the St. Ignace Public Library to answer questions about the state's unemployment program. Presenters will be from the unemployment agency. The meeting was organized by Michigan Works!

Girl Scouts To Host Food Drive Nov. 21
      The Girl Scouts will be hosting a food drive Friday, November 21, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Glen's Market in St. Ignace. Five troops will be participating, with girls from kindergarten through 12th grades. They are collecting nonperishable foods, paper products, personal care items, as well as frozen turkeys or other items for Thanksgiving baskets.

      St. Ignace Home for the Holidays Christmas Parade will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, December 5, across from City Hall on South State Street, ending at the marina. The parade will include Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will arrive on a firetruck.

Local Schools Honor Veterans
     Charlie Fowler, U.S. Army veteran and former St. Ignace Elementary School principal and teacher, addresses students during Veterans Day ceremonies at LaSalle High School. He encouraged students to seek out veterans attending the ceremony and ask questions of "these living historians." "Ask them how old they were when they started their service," he said. Mr. Fowler recognized recently deceased local veterans Dr. A.D. McKinnon, Dr. Robert Holle, Jim Brown, and Ed McNamara, who served the country in World War II. Mr. Fowler ended his speech by quoting President-elect Barack Obama: "The challenges before us are the greatest of our lifetime; two wars, a planet in peril, and the worst financial crisis in a century. The solution can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility where each of us resolves to not look after only ourselves, but each other."

Fielder Earns Award for Fisheries Study
      Dave Fielder, a Michigan Department of Natural Resources biologist at the Alpena Great Lakes Fisheries Research Station, has received the annual Pistis Award from the Michigan Charter Boat Association for his accomplishments for the Great Lakes fishery.

Victims Services Program Is Proposed by Sheriff's Office
      Volunteers are sought to help put in place a Victims Services program through the Mackinac County Sheriff's Office. The program, said Sheriff Scott Strait, would benefit families who need support in non-criminal situations where police and rescue crews are assisting victims, such as in the case of a fatal accident.

Brevort Twp. Hires Assessors
      Brevort Township has named Richard and Cynthia Oliver of St. Ignace as assessors, following interviews with five candidates over the past month. The Olivers will replace Supervisor Edward Serwach, who has been assessing the township since 2001, but resigned that position because it was too time-consuming.
