Charlie Fowler, U.S. Army veteran and former St. Ignace Elementary School principal and teacher, addresses students during Veterans Day ceremonies at LaSalle High School. He encouraged students to seek out veterans attending the ceremony and ask questions of "these living historians." "Ask them how old they were when they started their service," he said. Mr. Fowler recognized recently deceased local veterans Dr. A.D. McKinnon, Dr. Robert Holle, Jim Brown, and Ed McNamara, who served the country in World War II. Mr. Fowler ended his speech by quoting President-elect Barack Obama: "The challenges before us are the greatest of our lifetime; two wars, a planet in peril, and the worst financial crisis in a century. The solution can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility where each of us resolves to not look after only ourselves, but each other."
