Victims Services Program Is Proposed by Sheriff's Office

2008-11-13 / News

Volunteers are sought to help put in place a Victims Services program through the Mackinac County Sheriff's Office.

The program, said Sheriff Scott Strait, would benefit families who need support in non-criminal situations where police and rescue crews are assisting victims, such as in the case of a fatal accident. Volunteers could help families make calls for funeral arrangements, act as a liaison between police and families, or supply information to families.

The new program would supplement one already in place through the prosecutor's office for families affected by crime.

"About 90% of the victims police, fire, and ambulance workers come in contact with are not going to be prosecuted, so they won't get help from the prosecutor's office victims services program already in place," Sheriff Strait said.

Training for volunteers would be provided. The program is headed by volunteer Judy Luoma of St. Ignace and sponsored by the Michigan Sheriffs Association.

Those who would like more information about volunteering may call the sheriff's office at 643- 1911.
