Work Begins at City Bus Station Site
      "It must be Christmas because I didn't think I would ever report this. There is work being done at the bus station site," announced City Manager Eric Dodson at the St. Ignace City Council meeting Monday, November 17. Parking Lot Land Request Fails To Pass at Hessel
      A special land use permit for parking in Hessel failed to pass the Clark Township Planning Commission Tuesday, November 11, which couldn't reach a consensus, voting 4-4 on the matter. Hessel resident Brad Koster requested a special land use for residential lot 22 on Hill Crest Lane, which he owns, to be used for commercial parking by the Hessel Harbor Association (HHA).

First Buck Across Bridge
Deer Count Shows 48% Increase on Weekend Harvest
     Bob Gloden of Lake Isabella was the first hunter to cross the Mackinac Bridge with a buck on opening day of the 2008 firearm hunting season, driving home with a six-point buck at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 15. As of 7 a.m. Monday, November 17, 207 harvested deer had been counted crossing the bridge over the weekend, a 48% increase from last year, when only 140 were counted over the opening weekend, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority. Team Passes Through St. Ignace on Fundraising Journey for Disabled Vets
      Braving near freezing Michigan temperatures at the start of his journey, Ralph Keller of Sault Ste. Marie is riding in a wheelchair pulled by trained dogs to Florida. His two dogs, Tashba and Canuck, will take turns pulling him from Sault Ste. Marie to Orlando in a wheelchair outfitted with mountain bike tires.

      Township and school leaders attending a standing-room-only Road Commission meeting Tuesday evening, November 11, wanted to know what they can expect in winter road maintenance. Participants wanted to know how shrinking state road funds will impact township roads, emergency services, and school bus travel.

Work Underway at St. Ignace Wastewater Pond
     Project Manager Luke Gerhart (from left) and Superintendent Mike Grittenden of DeVere Construction Company of Alpena stand on the edge of pond four at the St. Ignace wastewater treatment facility Wednesday, November 12, as crew members work below, contouring the bottom of the pond. The approximately six-foot-deep pond holds 750,000 gallons of wastewater and is getting a new liner. Also, a manhole is being added that will serve as a drain and aid in future cleaning. The work, which is wrapping up for the season as winter weather approaches, is part of the city's $3.8 million sewer improvement project. Kamphuis Pipeline Company of Grand Rapids also is finishing work on the North State Street lift station. Overseeing the entire project is the engineering firm Wilcox Professional Services of Escanaba. Work is expected to resume in April 2009, depending on the weather.

      Sixth grade social studies students at Cedarville Middle School will get new textbooks soon. The Les Cheneaux Community Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the purchase of the books Monday, November 17, to meet state standards.

Clark Twp. Residents Will Get Extension on Sewer Bill
      Clark Township residents will get a one-time extension to pay their next quarterly sewer bill. The Clark Township board unanimously approved a 30-day extension for the first increased sewer bill at its meeting Thursday, November 13. Quarterly sewer bills will be increased from $46 to $72 starting next month owing to an amortization error discovered this summer.
