Election of officers and committee appointments were made at last week's Friends of the Library meeting. The new officers elected for a two-year term are: President Cornelia Miller, Secretary Cindy Dudeck, Treasurer Donna Stoetzer and President-elect Angie Leonard. Chair-persons are: hospitality, Nancy Glupker; newsletter, Marilyn Grevel; silent auction, Sandy Wytiaz; speakers/programs, Jan Schopp; publicity, Angie Leonard.

The outgoing officers, President Angie Leonard, Secretary Barb Boerger, and Treasurer Donna Stoetzer, have done great work for the group. The group has accomplished a lot in the past few years, including bringing speakers to the area, the silent auction in February, and the fall Scholastic Book Fair. All funds raised by the group are used to purchase materials for the library, which is available to students and the public.

One of the accomplishments of the group is the summer reading program. You can still see a part of this program if you visit the library and you can help the children complete their project. To fit the theme, "Catch the Reading Bug," and encourage the children to read, program director Patti Soule placed a large green circle behind a caterpillar head for each book read. Before the summer ended, there were 280 green circles and the caterpillar stretched around the top of the library.

The children then challenged parents and other library patrons to remove the caterpillar by buying a circle for $1 each. The sale went very well in the beginning and the caterpillar's body was reduced by 130 pieces, but there are still 150 circles remaining. If you stop in the library, you can still buy a caterpillar part. The kids and the members of Friends of the Library will thank you. All funds from the sale are to be used for the purchase of new elementary library books.

The Friends group will provide children's activities during Village Christmas. Following the Breakfast with Santa, sponsored by Fisher's Restaurant and the DeTour Passage Historical Museum, children can go to the Cultural Center for story time, craft making, and photographs. Volunteers will be on hand to take family pictures at the decorated fireplace and tree with parents' cameras. Albert and JoAnne Fountain are chairing the activities.

At the Wednesday meeting of the DeTour Area Chamber of Commerce, the group agreed to spend up to $600 to widen the snowmobile trails in town to accommodate the new groomer purchased by the snowmobile club. Our local trail groomers, Stu Volkers, Bob Vaught, Scott Lucy, Gary Dudeck, Brian McAdams, and Larry Schlink, are all excited to see the new machine, which should be arriving this week.

The Les Cheneaux Snowmobile Club takes care of grooming trails from Hessel, to Pickford, to DeTour and membership represents all of these areas. For the first time in quite a few years, two of the officers are from DeTour. Stu Volkers is club president and Bruce Julin is vice president. Stu also asked me to let everyone know that the club Christmas Party will be December 6 at Angio's restaurant. Members can call Stu at 297-3060 for information.

Most people know that little Cassidy Carr was injured in an auto accident last summer and spent a lot of time in the hospital. Cassidy has now returned with her father, Casey, and grandmother and grandfather, Tammy and Lynn, to her home in North Carolina. In a recent thank-you note to Janet Rathka, Casey said Cassidy is making progress but still has a long road of therapy and rehabilitation ahead of her. If you would like to drop a note or holiday wishes to Cassidy and her family, the address is: Casey Carr, 4559 Rivershore Drive, New Bern, North Carolina 28560

The early hunting reports from the woods are slow coming in, according to Cathy Kohring at North Country Sports. As of Monday morning, Tom Lehman of DeTour had bagged a 12-point and Johnathan Crawford of Goetzville an eight-point. Good luck on the rest of the season.
