Veceillo, MacDonald To Be Inducted Into Hall of Fame
This is the second in a series of five stories about people who will be inducted into the LaSalle High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Bud Veceillo Two Saints football coaches, Bud Veceillo and the late James MacDonald, will be inducted into the LaSalle High School (LHS) Sports Hall of Fame and be given the Distinguished Service Award during ceremonies Sunday, December 28, and Monday, December 29.
Mr. Veceillo was a head coach for the Saints football team and Mr. MacDonald was the assistant coach while the Saints played six- and 11- man football. During their coaching careers, St. Ignace compiled a 50- 24-3 overall record (see table below).
Led by the coaching duo of Veceillo and MacDonald, St. Ignace was a member of the Little 8 Conference for four years, then played independently for three seasons, before becoming part of the Huron Straits Conference for three years.
Mr. Veceillo taught biology and general science while a teacher at LHS. He coached basketball from 1950-51 to 1952-53, and was principal in 1962-63, the year the high school moved from the corner of Spring and Chambers streets to Portage Street.
James MacDonald He and his wife, Jo, have three children, Mike, Patti Ann, and Vicki Jo. The couple reside at Port Charlotte, Florida.
Mr. MacDonald coached golf at LaSalle and was high school yearbook advisor for more than 15 years. Known as "Mr. Mac" to many graduating classes at LaSalle, he taught American and world history before retiring in 1986.
Mr. MacDonald died January 11. 2004. His wife Harriet, and son Dan are also deceased. He is survived by three children, Kathy, Mark, Polly, and Kirk.
