Injuries End Athletic Seasons for Smock, Swope

Kyle Smock Kyle Smock Injuries can play a factor in the careers of athletes at all levels, and the St. Ignace Saints had two outstanding individuals who had to watch from the sidelines this fall, after suffering seasonending injuries before the seasons.

Senior Kyle Smock suffered a knee injury and was forced to miss the entire football season, and junior Chelsea Swope had knee injuries and sat out the cross country campaign.

Both athletes recorded outstanding years in 2007 in their respective sports, earning All- Upper Peninsula, conference, and area honors.

Before the 2008 season, the pair were expected to be the top returning athletes in their respective sports.

The Saints football and cross country teams had standout seasons during the fall.

Both of these athletes also play basketball and run track for the Saints.

"Kyle is a very dedicated athlete and probably one of the hardest working athletes on the team," said Marty Spencer, head coach of the Saints varsity football team. "He always prepares himself for the season with strong workouts and he was ready for the season before he suffered" the injury.

Chelsea Swope Chelsea Swope Smock did take to the field for one down during the Manistique football game October 24.

Diane Huskey, the Saints track coach and former cross country coach, also praised Swope for her dedication to the sport and her teammates.

"Chelsea has a lot of heart and this very difficult for her," said Huskey. "Time will heal, and she will come back strong and is willing to do what it takes to prepare herself for the season.

"Kyle and Chelsea are both strong athletes and their work ethics are outstanding," added Huskey. "They have positive attitudes and are very competitive and determined for a strong comeback from their injuries."
